My permit expired in October, how are long gun permits renewed?

- Now do I have to make an appointment on the website like I am applying for a permit for the first time?
- Do you just go over there and hand them your old permit, with the self addressed envelope? Or do I have to do all of the paperwork again?

It seems to be easier for someone to just fly to Vegas or Phoenix and just buy stuff there and fly back....

its like you are applying for the 1st time, only no need pay the rapback fee again

My Long Gun permit expired just after the RAPBACK BS started.  I just got around to renewing last month.  Since I hadn't paid the one-time-fee for RapBack & Fingerprinting, I had to pay it then.  That's on top of the one-time-fee I paid a few years ago to get my first PTA.  I guess "one-time-fee" doesn't mean what I think it means!   

Make a PTA: 3 or less appointment. 

Take the old Permit to Acquire with you along with your ID.

Yes, you have to fill all the forms out again.  Fill out the forms from the HPD site and take them with you.  Saves lots of time.

Take a picture on your phone of the dates your permit will be ready -- so you don't forget.  The dates are posted on the glass at the window.

I was leaving the parking garage after 10 minutes.

For pickup, no appointment needed.  Just do the COVID screening, and the pickup window is right next to that desk in Records.  I turned in my old permit when I did the pickup.

Super easy -- barely an inconvenience!   

As for Vegas, not all Vegas dealers will sell to out-of-state gun buyers without shipping the gun/s to a Hawaii FFL.  If you ever want to do something like that, call the dealer/s you plan to buy from before you leave to verify they will sell to you.  They can't legally sell you a handgun and let you leave with it, but they can long guns -- depends on their policy.

If you have it shipped to an FFL, the STILL have to apply for a PTA.  If you can carry it home, you'll need to register.  Saves you the PTA shuffle.

I would try to get an an appointment two weeks before your long gun permit expires, they will not allow you to apply for your long gun permit before that.

That's not how it worked for me last week.  The officer let me use the old one to copy from, then let me keep it because they don't take them at the application desk now.  You have to turn them in at the records section, which I did during pickup of the new one.

Good to know.  When I re-newed the long gun permit last year they took my expired permit at the application side.

Last year, they were going to take my current long gun permit on the application side.  I reminded them that it was still active and I had two weeks more, so they gave it back to me and said that I had to turn it in to get my new permit in two weeks. Which I did, since no one on this site does anything illegal.

Having visited the permit desk 10x in the past 18 months my experience has been the 'rules' about the process are totally up to whoever is handling you at the window. 'You can keep this', 'You cant keep this', 'you need to bring this', 'You didnt need to bring this (we already have it on file)' are dealers choice.  just smile and say 'Good to know".

Pro-Tips -

Try and get early early morning, they haven't been subjected to 5-7 hrs of dealing with ding dongs yet and are still patient, helpful and almost even happy to see you. Worst experience was an Extended Hours appointment (last of the day), they called me 90 mins before they appointment and asked if I wanted to come early, I did and they were pretty grumpy, rude and unforgiving on any little thing to everyone ahead of me. Its obvious they asked me to come in early so they could go home early.

Also I figured out a couple nice hacks in all those trips.

1) always grab another fresh batch of forms on the way out for your next trip, they love it when you show up with everything already filled out on the official stationary as opposed to DL'ed stuff, no clue why other than it makes it look like you are an old hand and not another hassle customer? 

2) If you are on the books that day and come in saying 'I was in the neighborhood and I know my appointment isnt for another couple hours, I can come back later if you cant fit me in now' they will take you right then. Its not like they are slammed with a huge line waiting and its another one they can cross off the list.

I tried again just for shits and giggles and I snagged a chance for July 25, at 12:30 pm.

I started to fill out the information and had to stop for a second to lift off my seat to let out a fart.

I looked at the screen and the appointment was gone.

I tried again and it said everything is booked for the next 90 days........   Fun times in the demokratic republic of Amerika, Hawaii division.

I kept refreshing the page every 10 mins, and ended up snagging an appointment for June.
I had to speed type on my keyboard, cause I got beat out of 2 appointments.
