I left at 0825. At that time only 15 or less appts were given out. Wasn't crowded at all. Parking lot still had a couple spaces open

All the bickering and d*ck swinging in this thread lost me. TL;DR.
Can someone definitively tell me what HPD means by "walk-in registration"?

In a nutshell, walk-ins are for registrations only.  Permit applications are still by appointment only.

Walk-ins are for the first 50 registrants each day.  If you get there early enough, they will give you a slip with the time they will serve you.  If it's late enough in the day, you'll be able to leave and come back.  Better than having to stand in line all morning and lose your place if you leave.

Walk-ins are less of a "walk-in" and more like in-person booking of registration appointments.  If you're lucky enough to show up when nobody else has that time reserved, you might actually be accepted as a "walk-in."

they start handing out appt times at 0700.  first appt is at 0800, then i think its every 10 minutes after that.
last time i went i needed to pick up a PTA at 0800 so i selected a registration appt at 1130 so i could pick up the firearm and come back later

What Flapp posted.

Keep in mind the "to and from" law. So if you live in Ewa and come to HPD at 7am with your firearm, and get a ticket to come back at 9:30, you cannot go get breakfast or coffee since your firearm will be in the car.

This means you will have to stay at HPD from 7am until 9:30.  Or go to a gun store or gun range and hang out there.

Thanks for all the quick replies, my dudes. Makes life easier for simpletons like myself.

I was afraid of that. Great structure and grammar as usual, Flapps.  :worship:

There are other possible options, like taking it to your place of employment, but none are convenient or guaranteed.  The laws are designed to discourage firearm ownership, not make it convenient.

It was mentioned in the "How's the line at HPD" thread that there is also "stand by". No appointment, just wait and if no one is at the window, it's your turn. I was there this past Friday, late morning with an online registration appointment I got months earlier. There's no covid screening, went in, got check off the list and went to the window to register. While I was waiting for the registration to be typed, the officer manning the front door confirmed that if you just wanted to wait, you could "stand by" with no appointment. It was empty at the time and he said if someone came right now, without an appointment, they could go straight in since the window was open.

Agree 100%.  This is why the permit to acquire process is still by appointment only.  The appointment process reduces one to "live" at their computer endlessly banging on the button in hopes of snagging a time slot.  Booking only 90 days in advance is bullshit.  Extended hours limited to 7 days in advance is bullshit.

This whole PTA and registration is bullshit.

HPD is sooooo eager to make sure your firearms are registered.  But they couldn't give a flying fuck about your permit to acquire appointment.
Sometimes you gotta know when to save your bullets.

Update from today.  However, like a wise man often reminds me, trust but verify.  Adult rules here.  Hopefully sharing of information and experiences will help folks, but do your own due diligence.  Be prepared to "go with the flow" to a certain extent.

No appointments needed to pick up permit or register.  Was advise this morning that for "registration side", line starts at 0700.  At opening time, an officer will come out and distribute time slots to those waiting in line, so you don't have to wait around that whole time and "wonder if you'll get in" (at least according to the officer that we spoke to).

I asked if there was an appointment system for registration, and I was told no.  But after hearing the explanation, it's more of a "no sense do online appointment because they are unavailable for 3 months out".  So the appointment system MAY be operational and it MAY continue, but didn't get definitive answer.  Again, do your own due diligence.

Anyways, line was short when I went this morning at around 0830.  Two people at the counter on the PTA side.  One person registering and one person outside waiting to register long gun (no appointment).  Pick up permit was fast.  Maybe 5 minutes.

HIFICO talked to the AG because they are not following thru on the settlement of the Yukutake et.al lawsuit.  Expect changes in October is what the AG said.

earlier this month i had a appt i made online for register , but i already registered via walk in
so i called 2 days before my appt to cancel it bc i wanted to open that spot up so more people can do a walk in
the person on the phone said no need to cancel it bc there are enough other slots to cover the walk ins.  she told me to just not show up
so there was at least my spot that didn't get cancelled.  i wonder how many more slots there are like this, unavailable bc they don't want to cancel an appt when i wanted to cancel it
less work for them.  i understand that.

I bet the reason why they said changes are coming in October is because they’re biding their time until that NY Supreme Court case.  A precedent will likely be set that will state the obvious-that Hawaii’s gun control laws are unconstitutional.

If walk-in registration for firearms began on May 10 and new registration appointments were no longer made online and appointments could only be scheduled up to 90-days in advance, is registration all walk-ins as of Aug. 10 (i.e., would we have cycled through all the reservations)?
