DIY Shoot-n-See Targets
« on: August 27, 2012, 09:16:55 PM »
I was too cheap to spend $25 to buy a pack of shoot-n-see targets so i made my own using scrap colored paper, strapping tape and a can of black spray paint. Took about three minutes just to make one. My shooting sucked but the targets turned out pretty nice on the first try. Anybody make their own or am I the only cheap guy on the forum?  ;D

We should start a "how cheap are you?" thread...  :geekdanc:

Round styrofoam or plastic lunch plates, first spray with florescent yellow, allow to dry and second coat with black. Add a orange sticker for center.

Strapping tape?  Do you mean clear plastic wrapping tape?

Step by step, please?

Sounds like a good idea if the mat'ls aren't too expensive.

I'm so cheap that my wallet creaks when I open it.

How much can the spray paint cover per can?  I'm thinking the paint is going to add up pretty quickly.

Try it without the tape, just using spraypaint and construction paper. Let me know how it works please =).

On a side note, I buy the dirty bird packs of 100 for like 62 bucks (shipping included).

I made an instructional video on youtube this a.m. and will post it here before the end of the day.

It won't work without the tape. The paint marginally adheres to the tape when dry.  When the target is struck, the paint flakes off of the perimeter of the bullet hole revealing the underlying colored paper. That's why I recommend the use of bright colored paper.

The paint can I used was partially filled, having been used on other painting projects. I've painted about 6 sheets and the can is still pretty much full. While the materials certainly costs money, I incurred no costs to make the targets because I used stuff lying around the house. My suggestion is that you look for the materials around your house before running out to the store.  If you are like me, you probably already have used rattle cans, packing tape and paper laying around somewhere.
