If it sounds too good to be true it usually is. Buy only from trusted sources.

Kind of makes you wonder, if the world really did go to crap and you had to use your gold coins or silver coins to trade, how would you make sure you weren't ripped off?

I know they make gold testers but they have some limitations

Simple way to test for fake coins using a small magnet:

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Nice video Flapp. Mahalo for posting it.
Many of us have magnets salvaged from all sorts of devices.

The coin shops have some pretty impressive but expensive testers.

Here is one of the free coin apps I like to use.

As I understand it the testers only work on gold and can't tell the difference between gold plated or solid gold.
The shop owner told me he can often tell by the weight and sometimes by the color. If they make a coin out of a different metal and just plate it the weight wont feel right

The sigma testers can test a variety of products with different alloys.

A plated fake will be detected easily.

Keep magnets away from these testers. It will be damaged by magnets.

Repairs can be expensive.
