very odd
https://www.kitv.com/story/44425853/hawaiis-tourism-agency-plans-to-reduce-visitors-to-oahu

The agency’s president and CEO, John De Fries, said he doesn’t yet know what the tourism cap should be.

“I think the priority piece for us in getting to that answer is getting a handle on the illegal accommodations,” De Fries said. “We see that as No. 1. I’m encouraged by the fact that each of the counties is making this a bigger priority on each of their islands.”

The plan also calls for a “regenerative tourism” fee that supports environmental resources and allows the tourism agency more oversight of trails and other natural sites.

Additionally, the plan seeks to manage visitors’ use of cars as transportation on the island.

The move is a change for the Hawaii Tourism Authority, which was created in the 1990s to increase tourism and fill the Hawaii Convention Center.

The 'trail management' bullet point is obviously in reference to Maunawilli Falls and the Haiku Staircase. Both which are now closed. Ironic that Social Media is 100% responsible for destroying them both. The residents of Maunawilli  and the state should be taxing / suing  the Sierra Club for re-cutting those trails wide enough to drive a truck up to the Falls. Those dirty hippies turned a teeny piece of nature in the middle of nowhere into another Haunama Bay level eco disater, not to mention bringing huge Waikiki nusiance levels of traffic into a very quiet residential neighborhood.  Green New Deal Commies know nothing about managing and protecting resources.

yes but its doesnt say anything about INSIDE the state, hence the 'the plan seeks to manage visitors’ use of cars as transportation on the island.'

So are they gonna make this Into Viet Nam with 100,000 mopeds swarming like piranha all over everything or tell folks sending $1000 a day to be here ;Go ride Da Bus!'

Anybody been North Shore lately ?
We got a job up Pupukea. Driving the North Shore from Haleiwa side is nuts.
Traffic from the bypass merge all the way to foodland.
In the summer !

This will probably sound kind of selfish, but as
long as the tourists stay on Maui, or Oahu, Ainokea.

Its always a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket and then start smacking the basket with a stick.

Even BI traffic has gotten noticeably busier than when I moved here in 2014. Oahu traffic is ridiculous.  When I lived across  Castle Medical up to 2014, traffic into Kailua town during the afternoon rush hour would back up to about where the new Wendy's is.  Now traffic backs up to Kapaa Quarry Road and even up to Castle Junction on a regular basis.  Tomorrow I have to go to Oahu for work for 10 days and I stay in Waimanalo.  Afternoon traffic on Kal Hwy into Waimanalo is beyond ridiculous, nearly approaching Westside traffic but at least you don't have the sun in your face.
Happily living in Puna

I learned to drive on So.CA roads and I commuted in Seattle traffic( arguably the country's worst) for 20+ years.
so I can deal with traffic.
Motorcycle or car.
It really isn't the tourists screwing things up so much as it is
Democrats and their lock-step Party agenda.
Why is the government, our largest employer not a 24 hour per day operation?
Why are large trucks on the road at 9 AM instead of 3 AM.
I worked all my adult life in industries that ran 24/7.
Most the time I selected swing or grave shifts to
avoid assholes AKA  "managers".
The solution is to use roads that we have 24/7.
Not just from 6 to 8 and 5 to 7.
Then figure out what we need to build.

In Taiwan, their main transportation are mopeds. Like the pic above. But the riders, even the older ladies are good drivers.  Aggressive, defensive type. Like they will speed around your car as to not hold up traffic. In our trips to Tawian, I have never seen an accident either.  But on a daily drive home from work here, I used see 1 when we lived 3 miles away.

Also when the light turns green, it's like a drag race.  Not like here where the mopeds take forever to turn the gas handle.  Cops in Taiwan don't enforce traffic laws too much either.  The idea is not to hold up traffic. The lines in the road are really a guide line.

"The lines in the road are really a guide line."
Right on!
I drove the old Saddle road for almost ten years.
Speeds were generally 60-80 mph.  I have no idea
what the posted speed limit was.
Only saw cops when somebody was dead.
Drove the centerline as the road then was only about
16 feet wide.  No emergency lane.
It was all Lava rock.
That was real Hawaii.

Now I understand more that FOB Asian drivers are bad drivers stereotype.  But like I said, shitty driver, but no accidents. When making a right turn at a corner, its not uncommon for a car or moped to overtake you from your left side and make the same right turn. Mopeds zag in and out. I think they rely that you're going to maintain your speed.  The biggest thing to look out for is when getting out of the cab. Often mopeds or bycles are zooming by.

Same goes when cars merging onto the freeway. HI drivers like to slow down, instead of trying to match the speed to make a clean merge.  Mrs. CMO drives often in the mainland and this irritates her when back home.

Then add in our roads are all jacked up. Roads in Taiwan are nice. And it rains daily there.  Someone in HI pocketing money and doing a shitty job so they keep having to get called to repair the roads. Saw 1 pot hole in Taiwan. And had a road crew there to fix it. When we passed the area a few hours later, they were gone and road was nice again.
