Thank you.  For now I'll probably show up at one of those fun shoots and just ask if they mind if I watch.  Then one day I'll ask if I can play. ;D

Gonna take it slow.  :shaka:
If you "show up at one of those fun shoots and just ask if they mind if I watch", bring your gear, guns and ammo anyway. You will be glad you did.

For anyone interested in participating in HDF or HRA range days/shoots/etc, ask away.  There are a number of folks that regularly post here that participate (or even some facilitate) those range days.  If you're shy, there are a number of threads discussing them.   ;D

I have participated in both.  All good people.  Everyone is a newbie at one point, and I can still remember what it was like when I first went out to either.  Yeah, there are some a$$holes that you'll encounter, but that's true in all facets of life.  In general, I have found shooters to be among the nicest, welcoming, accepting, etc folks.  Many will even encourage you to try their guns, with their ammo!  I mean don't push that, but there are many who will willingly and often do that.

There's also many other shooting events, like IPSC/USPSA matches, cowboy, skeet/trap, etc that many folks here have a lot of experience.  Hopefully we can get another 2a range day.  I coordinated a couple, so I nominate Rocky to set up the next one.   ;D

The first time I every drew from a holster was at a HDF Range Day. One of the instructors took me to the side for some private instruction. When I was incorporated back into the group, everyone there was patient and encouraging. I learned and had a great time. I have seen the same thing repeated with others at HDF and HRA events. If you are new and want to participate in training or competition, take the first step, the shooting community are great people and can remember what it was like to get started in learning new skills.

Thanks!  I am interested in the HDF and also the HRA fun shoots they hold periodically.  I think I'll show up for the fun shoots one day, as the skill builders require equipment (holsters, mag holders, etc) that I don't have (yet).

Although I own 2 revolvers (SA .22 LR and a SW29) I consider them "range toys".  The SA.22 is only for plinking because it's role as a defensive handgun is unpractical.  The SW29 is just too f*ckn huge to even think of it as a carry weapon, lol!  Both are range toys and were bought for that purpose. They will serve as HD weapons if the need be though.

As far as 9mm?  I pulled the trigger so to speak a couple of weeks ago and bought a SIG P365.  I'm still in the waiting period of the PTA.  While I was at it I also bought a Walther P22, again for mostly a range toy and also for HD, along with the SIG.

So this old fut is just only now showing interest in skill building as far as defensive handgun.  I still need to acquire holster, mag holders, belt, etc and also work on my basic safe handling of auto pistols since I've never owned one before.  By the way, I bought the SIG TACPAC, it comes with 3 -12 rd. mags with finger extensions but blocked for 10 rds. and it also has a holster lots of people in the know say that is not that great.  But for me as a novice it should do ok, I think.

I see myself at the KHSC pistol side for the time being getting familiar with the SIG and Walther.

Does anyone know if the HRA or HDF fun shoots and skill builders allow people to just observe before participating?  I'd like to do that but don't want them to think I'm one of those weird f*cks.

Retirement is wonderful.  I can do what I want, when I want and sometimes, BUY what I want! ;D

Been to a few HDF open shoots and Skill builders. I would consider myself a "new guy" with that crowd and they have been very welcoming. It does help that I have no shame and will talk to anyone. I usually bring my P365, holster and some other accessories to practice drawing from the hip and appendix. I recently changed out to the XL grip and will probably test it out at this months open shoot. You're welcome to check it out if there on the 28th.

QUIETShooter, I'm planning on attending the fun shoot this coming weekend myself and this will be my first time coming to an HDF event.

Bringing some firearms and ammo with me and yes, have some (lots) trepidation being the newbie. Wanted to do the skill builder but as I haven't done any real shooting in years now due to COVID and running youth sports leagues, I want to make sure I'm comfortable using my own firearms before I start using them "under pressure". If that makes any sense...

Hope to meet up and meet you and others from the community.

For all you pros, any tips on what to bring would be appreciated, but that's probably a better thread to make on it's own.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy.

Awesome!  Great that you're going out to shoot with HDF.  If CMO is there, challenge him.  ;D  But seriously, I'm sure you'll have a blast!

Sounds like you already have a good mindset for the skill builder.  The "under pressure" is certainly an aspect of training that I enjoy, or at least am mindful of.

Not a pro, but lots of lessons learned along the way.  Don't be "that guy".  Meaning listen to instructions, if you aren't sure, ask.  Be ready (on the line, correct gear, etc) when instructed.  Don't be the one everyone is waiting for.  For range days at KHSC, hydrate!  Drink a lot of water before hand.  Beyond that, go there with an open mind and enjoy (of course being safe).

bring targets, unless you just want to shoot at blank cardboard. Also a stapler and a small table to put your guns on would be good too. Although someone will have a stapler to borrow if needed. and you can just lay your guns on the ground.

If u go early, u can set up ur own paper targets from 3yrds up to 30. Like 7:45am. Hdf provides the stands. All u need is cardboard (they might have too) and targets. No human shaped ones.

If u miss this set up, then u will have to wait for the cease fire which is usually an hour later or so (9am-ish). Sometimes sooner, depending how crowded. Last range day, had like 3 people shooting. Guess ammo expensive.

Come find me. Ill be wearing the black plate carrier. Idk what time im going yet.

If u come at 715, they give u a discount for helping set up of $5.

You mean like when the skill building starts with a "cold drill", first shots of the day no warm up, and you bring a brand new, unfired gun?

And you've never presented from a holster, except with airsoft....

Yeah, something like that.   ;D

That was more like "skill assessing" than the start of the skill building. . .

IIRC, said "brand new, unfired gun" performed pretty well.  8)

Get to live fire my new Sadariland holster at HDF's open shoot.  Pretty much gonna draw practice the entire time and bring a Baer Solutions target.  Shot timer is the next thing on my to buy list.

For shot timer, I have a CE Pocket Pro II.  It's good, but I highly recommend the Pact Club Shot Timer III.  A couple of buddies have that one and I would get that one if I had to get another.  The CE works well, but it did shut down when we had a range day in the rain, where the Pact kept on going.

On days when HDF is not present, do you have to bring your own stand made of 1x3 lumber?
When I took the HDF gun safety training course, Mery was lugging around her own stand, so I would assume that most shooters remove their own stands after their time is up. This question pertains to the pistol range:  Are gopher holes only available at 25 and 50 yd distances?
