Noobie Questions - First post since introducing myself.
« on: September 15, 2012, 03:31:39 PM »
Hi folks,
I am still in Ak.
But, our move to Big Island is getting closer,.
So, my questions are becoming more important.

I have 3 firearms:
1. An H&R Model 165 that I have owned since I was 10 or 11 [1953 or '54]
2. A 1953r Russian SKS purchased during the "Great Assault Rifle Ban" buying frenzy [1980 something, as I remember]
3. A SS Ruger Redhawk .44Mag purchased in the "90s for bear protection while engaged in hiking, photography, remote paddling, etc.

Next May I quit working and start SocSec in June.
After my gal friend sells her condo sometime next summer, we will be doing a farewell road trip of undetermined route or length through Canada and the western [or more] states.
Finally ending in L.A. or S.F. to make the jump to B.I.
After arriving on B.I. we will be renting while we look for permanent quarters.
Then, after we have purchased a place to live, we will have that which we have decided to keep shipped over.

Q.1
I will not be bringing my firearms with me.
I cannot bring firearms through Canada.
Nor do I want to deal with them on the trip.
They will be shipped over.
Can they be included with the "household items" being shipped?
If not, what is the best way to deal with them?

I understand the process of registering firearms.
I can comply with it, no problem.

Q.2
I see no need for carrying bear protection when outdoors in HI.
But, I have spent so much time using the 44mag to become proficient with it, that I hate to get rid of it.
So, I'm thinking of having it drilled and tapped to mount a scope, then using it for pig hunting.
Is hunting with a handgun allowed on B.I.?

Q.3
I hand-loaded 300gr @ 1500fps for the 44mag.
I did not feel a factory load was big enough for a charging grizzly!!
But then, a[n] bazooka RPG isn't big enough either.
I have dies for the 7.62 x 39, but import ammo was cheaper than hand-loading.
So,I have never reloaded them.
Are reloading supplies available on B.I.?

Q.4
I understand that the SKS is a legal hunting firearm in HI, much to my amazement.
I have never lived anywhere where it was considered as such.
Being as I have only used the SKS for recreational shooting, I have 1k rounds of FMJ ammo in the closet.
Can I assume that FMJ ammo is not legal for hunting?

Q.5
What places [areas?] are available for sighting, practice and recreational shooting on B.I.?

Those are more than enough questions for 1 post.

We are looking forward to our next great adventure - our move to B.I.

Congrats on the move to the BI. Which side are you going to move to?

Q1. Yes, no problem.
Q2. No.
Q3. Yes. Check Kona Reloads when you get to the island.
Q4. Not sure of this question. But depending on who you use or how you move your items you may not be able to bring your ammo over with you. I made the mistake of having a company that rented the container for me pack my container for me. They insist on following some stupid rule about not shipping ammo without the proper paperwork which they won't do. So they won't pack it into the container for you. I should have packed the container myself or paid a separate company (which doesn't know the rules) to pack my container for me. Anyway, the point may be moot. But someone on here will know.
Q5. There is a range in Glenwood but you need to join the gun club to have use of it. Not a bad thing. Also, the BI Gun Club is looking for another place to build a range. And there are plans to build a new range in Kona some day. Hence my question of which side you are moving to.

Well, as it turns out I brought up Question #2 today at the range. And some were telling me that handguns are allowed under the following conditions:
1. It is your only firearm. In other words you can't have a rifle with you as well.
2. It is .44 Mag or larger.
3. It has a scope on it.

Others also said NO, handgun hunting is not allowed on the BI.

So I would double check because I am getting conflicting info on Question #2.

Well first off congratulations on the move. I am actually from big island. And I have hunted there many times with my Taurus raging bull 44 mag  and yes you can boar hunt with it

Q1) yes
Q2) yes but the scope is not required. btw make sure that it is visibale when carried in a hunting zone .... ccw is not allowed while hunting.
Q3)yes kona reloads they are nice but very expensive they also keep weird hours., tokunaga in hilo Nice people at the stores more fishing oriented but they do sell reloading supplies and ammunition, j hara store out side of hilo this is what you think of when you think of a hunting store they have firearms ammo and reloading supplies along with lots of fishing and spearfishing gear. and David Bobo 808 938-9483( he delivers islandwide) David is possibly lowest-priced reloading supplies dealer and ammunition dealer and all of the big island. There are several new shops have opened up or start selling firearms in Kona I don't know if they are selling reloading supplies bluewater Hunter is one of them.
Q4) no you cant hunt with fmj And 7.62 Ammo is dirt cheap even for the expanding rounds its like 5 to 8 bucks for 20 ...steel case though and if you packed your container personally know what is the question.
Q5) currently there are no public ranges on the big Island while there are a few private ranges my suggestion to you is to get a hunting license and go ask a DLNR officer where is a good spot to sight in your firearm they are usually very helpful and on the big Island there are several locations in different areas where people site in their firearm  .... However they are planning on opening up the public range soon ... year or so from now... in Puu Anahulu

Good luck and Aloha

@ Inspector, blazAR & armsinc
There is little doubt that we will settle in the Puna area.
Although, nothing is set in stone yet.

Q.1
Good. I will pack everything into the container myself, then either place it with a forwarder or friend to hold until we're ready for it.

Q.2
Good. I am ambivalent about putting a scope onto it.

After living in Alaska, Hawaii gun laws feel like a mine field.
Being as I usually wear it while also carrying a pack and because I find the weight of it on my hip to be uncomfortable,
I use a large frame chest carry holster similar in function to a tanker officer's holster for the M1911 .45.

Up here, I can wear it under. a coat to protect it from weather.
My understanding is that that is verboten in Hawaii.
[For those of you that noticed:  Yes, it is a LH carry.]

Q.4
I guess I'll just have to shoot up all the FMJ before leaving here.
That's no big deal. That's what I bought it for.
Then, I'll just reload my 7.62 X 39 brass in a proper hunting configuration after I get settled over there.

Q.5
Around here all you need to do is get away from people and have a safe backdrop. both are quite easy to come by.
F&G or DNR does have a formal range here near Anchorage also.
This will be looked into after I'm relocated over there.

If §13-123-22 "Conditions and Restrictions" are the de facto enforced rules, then hunting with a 44mag without a scope is lawful.

What makes me twitchy is seeing all the disclaimers about needing to consult an "official copy of Chapter 123".
It almost sounds as if they're laying traps for the unwary.

From Q.'s 1 and 3, I come up with:

Q. 6
Could I also include several 1# or larger cans of powder and packages of primers for reloading with the "household" goods?
Thanks for your input so far.
