I just picked up a box of Speer Gold Dots LE 124 grain.
Let me know if you want some baseline factory loads.
I keep looking for the Speed Gold Dots in the thread title but can’t find ‘em anywhere. >:(

That's cute. . .  ;D

That said, I hope to get into loading some 9 mm in the next few months.  I plan on chronoing to try to match or get close to 115 gr or 124 gr factory FMJ.  I can certainly chorono some GD 124 gr.  Mine are all "standard" though, as in not the P or +P stuff.

I got 115 gr FMJ you can have to chrono.
But my Speed gold dots are special. 124 grain. Lifted brah. Lifted.
Jo Koy reference.
Let me know if want to chrono a few.
I don’t shoot ‘em often.

In the past, I noticed that 9mm can be finicky with brass.
So I loaded 2 batches. One batch with BLAZER brass and one batch with WIN brass.
I wanted to see if it would make much difference.
Here are the specs on the test loads:

Speer 124 gr GDHP (pulled)
5.5 gr. CFE pistol
Fed100 primers
OAL= 1.12"
Taper= 0.375

Chronograph results 11/7/2021:
Test gun was a G17 with an aftermarket bbl.(cut rifling)
BLAZER cases= av. 1154 fps SD=8
WIN cases= av. 1164 fps  SD=11
(note: factory ammo clocked 1151 so this is pretty darn close)

Accuracy impressions:
Testing was from the bench at 25 yds.
I think the BLAZER cases produced tighter groups, but I got fliers.
I fired 2 each 5shot strings and got 2 fliers. The rest of the 8 rounds grouped about 2-1/2 inches.
see the pic:

The group with the WIN brass was not quite as good but not horrible.
Point of impact was approximately the same.

Final thoughts:

POWDER CHARGE:
If you can find primers, you can create your own realistic low-cost defensive-practice ammo at pretty low cost.
Since the test rounds actually exceeded the speed of factory GD ammo, I would probably drop the powder charge to 5.4 cfe because that is what I used in the past with good results.

COST FACTOR:
The cost to make your own 9mm defense-practice ammo would be somewhere around $10 to $12 per box of 50 rounds depending largely on the cost of primers.
The going price for the genuine factory ammo is about $40 for 20 rounds. (midway)

AVAILABILITY:
The bullets I found are speer gold dot bullets pulled from factory ammo and resold.
However a bullet with a similar weight and shape is the Extreme plated 124 HP.
The Extreme company won't ship to Hawaii any more. But you can order the bullets from Cabelas at a fairly reasonable price.
I don't know if they charge extra for shipping to HI.
In the past, I loaded these with very similar results.

As an aside to where to get X-Treme bullets I deal with a company called Sages Reloading Supply. Prices, service and shipping are comparable to buying directly from X-Treme. They ship USPS Flat Rate so no problem going to Hawaii. You recommended X-Treme to me and I have been using them ever since. But buying direct has been a bit of a hassle due to long lead and shipping times. And Sage’s offers quick turn around and shipping times. Plus they over compensate when they package the items you buy. Customers joke on their forum about needing a hacksaw or a chainsaw to open the boxes.

Good Intel on Sages.
I got plenty 9mm bullets now. Especially since it's not my fav caliber.
Newbies should check out Sages if you're getting into loading this kind of ammo.

I ordered 1000 of the xtreme HPs a couple months ago from cabelas and shipping was still free.  Downside is it takes weeks to get here.  Just checked and the 124gr HPs look to be in stock right now, $52.99/500.  Cabelas is good too because they have coupon codes pretty often so can get em a little cheaper.

Wanted to say thanks for this and thanks for your original “gold dot project”.  I actually been loading these “simulators” for years after reading your original gold dot project post.  Been using unique and the xtreme 124gr HPs.  Once I run out of unique I’m gonna give the CFE a shot.  Thanks again!   :shaka:
