I've always been of the opinion that "assisted suicide" is an oxymoron. It ceases to be "suicide" if you have assistance.
We should revert to calling it what it is: Euthanasia.
Euthanasia (from Greek: εὐθανασία 'good death': εὖ, eu 'well, good' + θάνατος, thanatos 'death')
is the practice of intentionally ending life to relieve pain and suffering.
Calling it "suicide" makes it sound like the individual is ending their own life, but in reality, they are asking someone else to end their life for them. It's euthanasia no matter who made the decision, because the person isn't ending their existence on their own.
It's funny how sane people have the right to commit suicide, but people suffering from mental health problems do not. Are they not suffering just as the cancer patient? Why are rights to be decided by society when we judge someone to be unable to choose for themselves? Society will never choose "assisted suicide" even if they committed murder. They will be judged incompetent to understand what they did, and condemn them to live in a mental hospital and continue to suffer with their disease/defect.
Maybe ending the torment of living with a severe mental problem is the best solution? Maybe that would reduce the number of murders and mass shootings?
Just thinking out loud ...
