Flying with firearms (Hawaiian)
« on: March 05, 2022, 07:07:25 AM »
Hey yall, I'd be moving to AZ this year from Oahu. And I have a few concerns since I'll be flying HA with my miles to save on expenses.

I know I'll have to sell majority of my ammo because of weight limit. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with HA, traveling with my ammo storage in my PMAGS with the covers. If anyone ran into any issues doing this.

Also if anyone ran into any issues with having batteries in their optics or weapon lights. As well as having spare cr123 batteries in their kit, in their check in pelican cases?

Hawaiian doesn’t allow ammo to be stored in mags even though TSA and other airlines do. Ammo must be stored in original packaging (boxes, not loose) or in a plastic container that keeps the rounds from touching each other.

I tried to fly with ammo in mags once and I had to turn over the ammo to the airport police and they had to fill out a report.

Technically any lithium ion batteries need to be carried in your carry-on due to fire hazards. Hawaiian and a couple flights where lithium ion batteries exploded in the cargo causing an internal fire…that being said, I’ve never taken out the batteries from the lights/optics when flying.

Gm. I’m actually here in Las Vegas and flew on Hawaiian. Only brought one handgun to test and ammo was already waiting for me in Las Vegas. My handgun had a red dot with battery installed. No issues. Weight limit on ammo is 11 lbs.
Have to declare case with handgun and ammo

Hope this helps

Aloha and good luck in Arizona

So would it be ok to keep the batteries as long as their in storage containers that keep them from moving? and in my carry on? Or just keep the one's that's installed in my optics and weapon lights?

Their policy is to keep them in your carry-on…however they’re packaged/stored. That being said, I’ve never taken the batteries out of any of my lights/optics when flying.

If you want to be on the safe side, take them out and put them in a ziplock in your carry-on.

The ones that caused the fires were almost always e-cigs, laptops, or cellphones.

No major problems so far with Hawaiian Air, highly recommend going early just in case and also printing out Hawaiian Airs policy on traveling with firearms and keeping that with you (had some minor issues with the ticket agent but not a big deal, just showed her the policy). I have never taken out the batteries (cr123) from any of my optics or flashlights when traveling and have had no issues with that.....

Good luck on your move and enjoy all the freedoms that Arizona has....

Same for me

OP - in addition to the airline’s policies, print out TSA’s policies. I have “discussions” with a few gate agents and sometimes their supervisor on their own airline’s policy. It happens, roll with it, be polite and be ready to go with the flow just a little.

There’s a thread a while back where I was on the same flight with a couple of other 2a folks. By coincidence, we were in check-in line together. We all had different gate agents and had different policy implementation. I don’t recall all of the details, but from what I remember one had to lock ammo in a separate checked bag, one left ammo as-is, and another iteration. It wasn’t until we got to our destination when we compared stories that the differences came out. Worked out well, but just interesting experience.
