Colt 1911 Series 70 Government model

Opinions.
Ran into one circa 1980.
Just curious to hear opinions of those with experience.

Messed up thing is HPD previously registered as a 4” barrel.

Very nice pistol if you like classic wood and blued steel.  They tend to be loosely fitted (some shake rattle and roll) and sometimes the trigger can be pretty crappy but they generally shoot pretty well.  Lots of people swap parts on these, so if you better know what you're looking at.

I just bought a Series 80 blued Super .38 that looked like it was never fired and the finish was excellent.  It was in a gun shop and they do not allow field stripping, so when I got it home imagine my surprise when I found that the recoil spring plug was missing AND there was heavy rust and pitting on the frame and slide rails.  I have no idea how that could have happened, but it's there.  I'm still working on cleaning off the rust (Kroil takes some time) but in the meantime I switched the grips for the classic Colt checkered walnut and replaced the long plastic trigger with a short Series 70 steel trigger.  I'll take pictures and post them the next time before I get oil and rust all over the place.

What caliber is the gun you're looking at?  Is it all original?  # of magazines (and do they have the Pony on them)?  Box?  Blued or nickel?  Price?  If it's under a grand and checks all the boxes that's a pretty good deal, particularly if you like it.  If you don't, sell it to me, LOL.

BTW, don't worry about the barrel length.  As long as the serial number matches to the owner's registration (G#) HPD can/will make corrections to the description.  I once bought a pre-war N frame .38 Heavy Duty and HPD registered it as a Model 10 (K frame), lol.  I didn't even try to bother correcting them.

Couldn't resist a quickie (twss), pardon the poor lighting (also wss)

and the backside (ok, by now you know...)

BTW, that's a 9mm barrel and WC 10 shot magazine installed.

The original trigger had an annoying intermittent creep (not you, brah)--changing and/or removing the firing pin safety parts didn't help but swapping out a new Colt MIM sear cured the creep right away, even with the safety parts installed--it's about 4 pounds now, clean if not "crisp."

Last one. Again.
Kinda my holy grail.
Gotta go into rapback now though.  >:(

1980 all original. Maybe 100rounds through it. No box but it comes with two colt mags and paper bag.  :D

O.F.
Set up the 1911 shoot.
Rocky gotta be there though to boost my self esteem.

Got a Sig Scorpion 1911 that I had the trigger changed on and the smith changed the action to Series 70. Was Series 80.
Came out smooth but not as crisp as the Colt based dry firing.

I got one made in around 1979-1980.
Bought NIB(unfired) from a local contractor in 1998 for $475.
I shot 200 rounds through it and got a lot of feeding and extraction issues out of the box. Never shot it anymore since then.
Heavy trigger pull. Lots of machining marks inside the slide, frame, and on the feed ramp.
It has very nice bluing though.

Anita and Maria.
(West Side Story reference)

Got it and registered.
“ The most beautiful sound I ever heard:
Maria,… I just met a girl named Maria……”

Anita, a little more direct and no nonsense.

Thanks for the encouragement guys.

Different movie reference but:
“Adrian. I did it!”

Bought a Series 70 from a friend many decades ago in SoCal.  Private party sales, state can suck on it.

Nickel plated, but what can you do.   Classic loose fit.

Read up on things, lowered the ejection port in the machine shop at Northrop (not cool).  Added a non adjustable rear sight and a higher profile front

Swapped barrel bushings to one requiring fitting, polished the feed ramp.  Peened the rails and squeezed the frame.  Did a trigger polish.

Damn thing is still tight and reliable, despite my amateur gunsmith hackery.  More accurate than I am, and never failed to operate.  Astounding considering i did not know anything but what I read.

Still, bought a Glock or two over the years, just in case my jiggery pokery causes a malfunction.

Dang Rob. Thank you.
Sincerely.  :shaka:

Always have my Glock also.
Trying to my sell my Glotch (as he calls it) to the knucklehead in classifieds for $2K but he won’t respond.

My daughter would be upset if I sold my Glock.
Rob. We need to sit down at an O.F. Cookout at the range when you’re in Honolulu.

Shot like a champ.
(The gun not me.)

Worked better with the old Colt mags than the Sig mags or Wilson Combat mags.
Couple failure to ejects with those but weird thing was next round fed and spent round was in the back of jam.   ???
What is that, mag or extractor problem ?
Same thing the Sig Scorpion.
Limp wrist problem?  :D

Just need more break in ?

Anyway, fun day at the range with Glasser and his kin.

The spend case was “in back”?

The next round was in the chamber and spent case right above it?

Failure to eject typically a limp wrist of extractor tuning (spring, angle, etc).

Did anyone else experience the same malfunction?

Mostly it was the young boy. He shot it the most though.  (Young boy is 20 years old for reference.)
I think I had one.

But yeah. Next round fed and spent case got stuck behind.

Behind, as in between the breech face and the round in the chamber? Or spent case on top/above the next round that is partially in the chamber?

Spent case behind and slightly above the partially/mostly chambered next round.
Popped the mag. Popped the spent shell and next round was already 3/4 in the chamber and chambered no problem.

(Of course I blame the young man. Was probably me.  :D)
