Aloha bird Hunters, my son (age 11)  and I (age 31) are new to the sport of hunting.. We are interested in taking game this season. But, I don't know where to begin, location, experience, and tracking/flushing skills are minimal to none... We like shooting clay and trap, and both are excited to make some hunting memories... Any suggestions would be appreciated..any person, clubs or groups that can help?  We both have gone through Hunters safety and possess hunting licenses... Thx.

Are you and your son in good health and physically fit? (Walk at least 5 miles hilly terrain with shotgun and pack)
Do you or your son have severe allergies? (Stings, pollen)
Are you trainined in first aid?

Thanks Teichi for the quick reply... Yes, my son and I are in good physical health. I am CPR and first trained, and lucky to have refresher courses offered through my employer.. But I think my son should wait a couple seasons til dad gets more experience and familiar. I wouldn't want to endanger and discourage his attitude if I felt he couldn't cope with the environment.  Till then, he will  practice safe firearm handling and on clay.  Any suggestions on sites and what type of bird in the area? I have a Co worker that has bird and mammal hunting experience on the mainland, and I feel comfortable with him being a safe responsible hunting partner, though he didn't hunt in Hawaii before and is eager to do so also. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thx

Ive heard from the hunters that its different hunting pheasants here.
Any who a lot of people go out at the start of the season, and as the season continues, it dwindles down to just the regulars.
Not sure where techi goes, but up kuaokala, by unit 14 its kind of a small area, and from what ive seen gets pretty crowded up there.
Not to sure about the other side where the rancher guy is.
Last year apparently 2 guys was going scrap cause of a bird/dog dispute.

I'm planning on going to Kuaokala on Veteran's Day. I usually get out to the check in station by sunrise. I usually finish by noon. There are other hunters out there. Wearing blaze orange is mandatory.

Happy hunting man.  We just released ring neck pheasants about 2 weeks ago.  Nice blue/greens

You are welcome to tag along. You will still need a a photo ID and hunting license to gain access to the hunting area. Don't forget the orange vest. I'll be at the check in station at 0630.

The hunting area was pretty dry. The only game I saw was on the road up.
I'll try again after Thanksgiving

What side do you hunt on?
When you get to the top main gate, do you head left or right?
