Koko Head Incident Sat. Oct 20
« on: October 20, 2012, 03:30:17 PM »
A pistol blew up at the silhouette range around 2 p.m. this afternoon.  I don't know all the details but 2 HFD trucks and an ambulance showed up.

Anyone know what happened?

I was at the other end of the silhouette range when it happened.  I didn't want to make too nosey but asked the RO what happened and he said an older guy with experimental gun or load blew up while shooting prone and the shooter had splinters from the pistol stock all over his chest.  He was an older guy with a bad heart is what I was told but he was ok, more shocked than anything.  He denied going to the hospital and everyone went back shooting around 3pm.

I witnessed a similar event a while back at the silhouette range. There was a guy there that was firing some over-charged handloads. His gun blew up and the side plate from his gun zinged past my face. When I went to return it, his hand was leaking  pretty bad. I hope it wasn't the same guy this time. If it is, he is putting everyone around him in danger.

We all learn the hardway. I have made 9mm+p and shot it out of a unsupported chamber.

The mag blew out the bottom. And the grip cracked.  Was messed up. Luckily no one got hurt. (long time ago. Know better now)

Yes, glad to hear that he's ok.

If reports here are accurate, sounds like an experiment or customization gone wrong.  Any kaboom is bad, but I would be much more worried when I hear reports of stock guns and manufactured ammo leading to kabooms.

The guy was shooting a XP100. He had a case jam in the gun and didnt realize it was live. He but a rod down the barrel to take out the round. The rod was on the wall side  The round went off while he had the rod to the wall.  The bullet got stuck in the barrel and the rod got twisted up. That is the piece of metal everyone seen. The case blew out and splintered the fiberglass stock. Heard this from one of the senior members who saw the whole thing happen.

That guy shooting shooting the savage bolt pistol was next to me 3 weeks ago.  Younger guy someone said he works or is associated with Honolulu firearms.  Shooting hand load .308.  He was talking about his new build coming in that uses 50bmg heads.
The .308 is insane would blow the plates completely off the rail and watch them fly though the air.  The guns blast was brutal I could feel the table shake and my ears were hurting.
Hope he's okay now.

My friend Norm has a 50BMG 1911. It is ridiculous. I shot it at the Honolulu Gun Club 20 years ago. That was crazy. It is downloaded with a cast 500gr bullet.

There is another guy with a 30-06 Thompson Center Contender. Wait till you hear that thing.

I've seen the single shot pistol guys on the rifle range and they were getting pretty good groups at 100 yards!

Every so often, I hear some LOUD booms from the silhouette range, but I've never been there when those guys were shooting whatever those guns are.  Sometimes they are so loud it seems loud even when I'm in the action bays across the way!

Anyways, hope that guy is all better!

Id love to shoot either at the silhouette range, pure murder on those "pistol" targets...

There is a prohibition against .50 BMG at the KHSC.  sorry!

Here's another (unrelated) story about an accident (more like negligence);

By Star-Advertiser staff
POSTED: 05:40 p.m. HST, Nov 01, 2012

A 25-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the thigh this afternoon with a .40-caliber gun at a Mililani house.

According to Emergency Medical Services, the man was taken in serious but stable condition to a trauma center after a 2:56 p.m. call Thursday.

The man was holding the gun when he accidentally shot his thigh. The hollow-point bullet went into his inner thigh and out his outer thigh, leaving a nickel-size entrance wound, according to EMS radio transmission.
