Back in the 1970s, there was a gun control push to ban semi-automatic handguns. At the time, most LE were issued revolvers. Only "gangsters" used semi-auto handguns.
Then came the ban on Saturday Night Specials. Most of those were .22 - .25 caliber. Once the supply of those dried up, people started buying semi-auto 9mm instead. Also, to keep up with the technology being employed by criminals, LE started issuing .45 and 9mm semi-autos. This is when the anti-gunners understood there's no wy they are going to get LE and the public to support a semi-auto handgun ban. The Brady Campaign was the biggest supporter of these bans.
As time went on, Brady decided to shift focus to "assault weapons."
Sat Night Special, 9mm semi, Ar-15 .... each agenda change targets the weapons owned by the most citizens so that, if/when banned, it takes the largest number of guns off the "street".
Of course, it's a matter of logical probability that the most-owned guns in the US would be the one used in a relatively higher proportion of gun crimes. That's the thing they use against us. Most mass shooters use AAR-15s, so if we eliminate AR-15s, we'd see fewer mass shootings and fewer deaths in the shootings that do happen.
Never mind that the VA Tech mass shooting was instigated with a 9mm Glock and .22LR Walther, and that event held the record for highest body count until the Mandalay Bay shooting.
The public should be allowed to own the most effective self-defense weapons available. Canada's leader stated, guns are about hunting and target practice. Maybe that's what HE believes, but it's far from reality. I wonder how many armed guards he has protecting him when out in public?
