I think we are all in agreement on this. I hope he had good insurance because I don't know if he could make a strong case for damages.

What do you mean his family is out of a house? Did he have to sell it to make bail?

it is trashed. The family was getting threats by all the friends, family and thuggish ruggish types of the deceased. I don't know who owns it now.

In summary what the State has shown to the rest of us average Joe, law-abiding citizens is that it is OK for kids to drink in front of your house, shoot pellets at your house but don't you dare defend yourselves from these crumbs.
And you know what they win. Not hoping for CCW here in Hawaii, not buying a gun for it. I'm saving for a place somewhere else on the mainland.
There is no value in the "price for paradise". Rampant public corruption. Defending criminals. Going after this family man.

That's the root of the problem right there.  Lack of family and family values.  Long gone a long time ago.  No accountability.  No parents to teach that accountability.  People only like poke now.  Kids are just products of their poking.

Then these kids grow up to be criminals and politicians.  One and the same.  Only difference is the criminals went public school and the politicians went private.
Sometimes you gotta know when to save your bullets.

Does ccw insurance also cover home self defense? I expect things are going to get worse soon and it’s something I’d like to get, but only if it’s useful.

It's actually not CCW insurance, it's self-defense insurance so it works at home too.

I talked to him a while back, the trial was costing him a lot of money so I assume he didn't have insurance.  A bail bond alone is $100k.

That is too bad. If I were him I probably would have moved after the shooting anyway just for future safety

People live where they can afford or where they call home.

Easier said than done.

Plus, what makes you think his problems won't follow him?

Yeah, just pick up and move away after the justice system drains your retirement savings with illegitimate political prosecutions while the most-favored welfare recipients who aren’t required to follow any laws trash whatever equity you had left.

Real great solutions you got there, bub

I asked this guy and other self-defense victims for support  in HIFICO's bill to reimburse legal fees in self-defense trials.  But no one helped.

May have been on the advice of his attorney. I wonder if he would go for it now.

I doubt the losers who were harassing him have the brain cells or the motivation to go out and find him.

What I can tell you is I am not going to risk that one of that idiots friends decides to get revenge on my family member. Can't be on alert constantly.

You obviously haven't lived around people of the redneck persuasion.  They will travel to another state to pick a fight with someone they are still mad at, just because.

That doesn't take "brain cells".  It takes a deficit of them.

Again, you think moving is simple.  It's normally a hardship for people of limited means.

I am not saying it is easy to relocate, all I am saying is that I would.  If I killed one of my neighbors and the rest of his family were still there just itching to get revenge then it is a constant threat I wont be able to guard against constantly. Do you disagree?

I can't tell you what you should do in that situation.

Apparently you have no problem saying what the man in the story should do.

If I were him I probably would have moved after the shooting anyway just for future safety

"If I were you" is usually meant as advice -- telling someone what they should do.  "If I were you, I'd start running before she finds the gun!"

Saying, "If that were me," might be closer to "what I would have done" versus "what he should have done."

You're reading too far into this. It is as simple as if I were in his situation I would do X. Not saying what he should do, saying what I would do.
Not sure why you are trying to pick an argument over this. Am I not allowed to say what I would do if I were in his predicament?

Because it's how the music goes.  You like to be hyper-definitive whenever you play Devil's Advocate, making everything one extreme or the other -- either it's all, or nothing.  Not everyone does it, so you can't say it's the norm even if it is.

It isn't even a quibble, you are reading something I didn't write and I suspect you are doing so purely for the sake of having an argument. If you wanted a serious discussion you could have asked if I was saying what he should do and I would have told you no. But you didn't, you just accused me of telling him what he should do and I have clarified that you were wrong, nothing more needs to be said.
