There was a military guy behind me yesterday.  When it was his turn at the window, he had the waiver for the handgun safety class that his commanding officer had signed.  Unfortunately it wasn't notarized so he was turned away.

I felt so bad for him.  I don't know how long we were in line only for him to be turned away.  Then he would have to come back another time and wait in that line again.

Did the HPD dance today.
Got there at 0820, I started at the door, set my stop watch for the heck of it; 1 hour 9 minutes.
When I left, the line was to the metal detector :-\

As I was standing there, I realized the lines for the registration/ report windows get next to no business, I counted 3 customers in the time I was there. As a matter of fact, the half dozen times I've been there they get very little traffic.
What would the harm be( or extra work ?) to allow the firearms department to use one of their windows when it gets crazy....just thinking out loud.

Lifer, the problem with your idea is that it makes sense.

Seriously, that would help so much.  People with general questions or just paperwork (requesting permit to acquire, picking up permits) go to one of those other windows.  People who have firearms with them, go to the window we use now.

But yeah, I think I saw like 4 or 5 people at those other windows the whole time I was there too.

they cant, because they dont have that under the window tray set up there that they have at firearms for you to pass your guns through.  they would never be able to physically handle your guns to get the serials.

i meant that if you have the firearm with you for them to check the serial number, then you would still go in that little room that we have to go to now and pass them your weapon into that slot under the window.

but if you were only there for a paperwork type of transaction (ie picking up a permit to acquire, or applying for a permit, etc), then maybe they could set up one of the other windows (opposite of the fingerprinting area) to help those people.

 ???

Actually, if it were just permit pickup, they could use the first window and a separate line.

It's not that it's not possible, it's that the registration process is supposed to be hard. It's supposed to be tedious and it's supposed to serve as a legal deterrence to firearms ownership.

Things to do while waiting for 7:45am...

*Make poop in the HPD restroom

*Read the wall of honor (officers lost in the line of duty)

*Make a new friend

I know, seriously.

Hopefully this will pass and return to somewhat normalcy soon.

I do have to say it is good to see people interested in firearm ownership, even if it is the "usual suspects" adding to their collection.  I've noticed a LOT of women applying for permits or registering handguns.  That's good to see as well.

I left around 9:15 this morning and the line was all the way to the main doors to the police station. I think that is where the metal detectors are. It was crazy. We had 7 people in the little room at one point. Fortunately, everyone cleared their firearms properly without sweeping the room. A lot of people going straight to the front of the line wanting to just apply for a permit. When told they had to go to the back of the line two guys got mad.

So being 5th in line means it took me 1.5 hours to register 2 lower receivers from the time the doors opened at 7:45am. That is the longest I have ever been there at one time.

If anyone has connections, we should get the news to cover this and show where the city and improve its service to the public.

I know one of the anchors at Hawaii News Now.  I'll ask her.  She'll probably want me to be on the segment though.  She wanted to do a story about importance of wearing your seatbelt after I totalled my 4Runner about 6 years ago (somebody hit me and ran), but I didn't want to be on the news segment, so she didn't do the story.

Anyways, I'll ask her next time I see her and see what she thinks.  Maybe I should take her shooting and then have her think about doing the story.

Great!  An interview with that military guy who stood in line for an hour, only to be told to return because his affidavit wasn't notarized would probably make a good news story. Talking to the multiple folks waiting in the line would probably be yield one or two stories also.
