One time I was there and the woman that works there told me a woman tried to register a handgun that was 6 months or so from purchase.  She told me they confiscated it and made her go through the permit to acquire it again.  She said something like "we try to be reasonable, but that was too long".

The odd thing is that HPD didn't know she didn't register the handgun until she brought it in.  Scary, I wounded how many weapons didn't get registered after purchase?

just curious what happens if you are late in registering? if everything is manual carbon copy how does HPD know if you registered or not? do they call you? or do they wait until you try and register to confiscate weapon?

In the case of a pistol, they confiscate it from you and make you apply for a permit to acquire all over again.

In the case of a rifle, if you've got an active permit, they scold you and register it.

If your permit is expired, they confiscate it and make you apply for a permit and wait the obligatory 2 weeks.

Now here's the fly in the ointment...

If you're somehow charged with absolutely any other crime (where confiscation is mandated) or if in a MVA while in the possession of an "unregistered" firearm, you will be charged with a crime.

Millions and millions, nationwide, and yet somehow the American people manage to not be killing each other in the street.

There's nothing scary about it.

Last i heard when I chatted with the firearms guys, they were six months behind entering permits into the database.   That's why they want you to bring the previous permit # when you do a private purchase.  They can't necessarily bring the permits up on their database.  Also, don't discount the general ineptness of government agencies....

I think in all the years I have registered either In state or out of state registration,
I don't think they have ever asked me "WHEN" did I acquire or "when" did I arrive
back into Hawaii.
Has anyone else ever been asked?

Well, for handguns they do have your permit to acquire you have to present when you register.  That affixes the date pretty well.

Just got here @ 630a; line wraps around 2nd pillar and doubles back towards Ewa. I'm guessing that I'm about 30-35th person in line.

This is nuts. I went twice few weeks ago on random days after lunch, and both times the line was at the finger print counter.
I actually thought things were getting better.

Good point, not everybody can take a day off of work just to appease the "registration gods".

I left HPD at 9a, however today I popped my cherry and probably would've been out of there at 845 if I didn't have to wait to get fingerprinted for the first-time permit app. Line moved fairly quickly when the doors opened, since most of the guys in front of me were there to register their long guns. At around 815a they began calling for permit pickups. Line was out to just past the third pillar when I left.
