Traveling to Nashville wiff no gun….
« on: October 16, 2022, 11:52:46 AM »
Going to Nashville next week for my niece’s wedding. Was going to bring my G2C (Tn is permitless carry and I have three non resident CCW permits) but after some thought I decided against it. Reason is I’ll be flying Delta to LAX then on to Nashville and then to Seattle on the way back home. Read some horror stories about luggage being vandalized and guns stolen while in transit and EX-LAX is by far the worst. Sheesh, don’t need anymore headaches. Got enough already with the old lady “making plans” while we’re there….. >:(

There was someone on here that showed pics of how they attached their pistol case to the inside of their checked bag.  Keeps the two from being separated -- any thief would have to steal the whole thing.

Found it.  From Rocky:
https://2ahawaii.com/index.php?topic=45288.msg418471#msg418471

You could also check a medium-to-large Pelican case at the counter as a separate piece of luggage.  Nice option if you have multiple firearms, mags, lights, RDS, holsters, etc. which take up more space than a small Pelican accommodates.  This has the benefit of freeing up space in your luggage for more "stuff", but could also mean paying for another piece of luggage unless a couple can share one bag for their clothes and stuff within the max weight limit.

Delta's policy limits liability for lost luggage at $3,800 per ticketed passenger.  If you're traveling with someone else, and have more than one firearm, it's probably better to place the guns in separate bags.  That makes it less likely both firearms go for a walk, and it doubles the loss coverage.  Easier for two people to get paid for separate claims for < $1000 than it is for one person to claim close to $2000, assuming firearms, accessories and regular luggage items total that.

Just some ideas.  I wouldn't go without my pistols just because of what might happen in transit.  Even without intentional theft, the airlines have a high percentage of lost and misdirected luggage issues.  If you're willing to risk that, theft is going to be a smaller risk.

Good idea about LAX.

If you ever saw who the baggage handlers and TSA were, the theft is understandable.  Straight outa Compton.

I will not fly with a stop in Calif anywhere, particularly SF and LAX.

Too bad no one flys non-stop to Nashville or within driving distance.  No stops means less opportunity for theft.

IMO, ur safety is worth the hassle if u do have to buy another gun.and ill assume u own more than 1 gun, so u wouldnt be defenseless in HI if ur gun is stolen.

Probably one of the main reasons criminals get ahold of firearms........

my impression when traveling with pistols, is the airlines are very paranoid
of the ATF if a gun is missing./stolen.
When you surrender your pistol to the airlines , they are responsible for
what happens, if that is
"lost" and later used in a crime.
I never ship a fully operable gun. that is what 2
day air is for- parts and pieces.
I can put a PPKS back together pretty quick.

I was going to suggest mailing it to himself at the destination address, but the way UPS and FedEX are acting now, they may reject the firearm unless it's FFL-to-FFL.

Have to try it to see what the real policy is now.  If like most businesses and gov't agencies here, it usually depends on who is assisting you.

Pay for your ticket with a credit card so your bag is better insured and just go with it.  There's always that chance it'll be stolen, but that's life.

Delta is unusual though.  That's the one that uses 3 foot zip ties around your luggage with a gun so everyone knows what's in it.  It's usually held at the luggage office, but sometimes still goes on the carousel.

Just take the gun with you and enjoy a few days of freedom. I can imagine the headlines in Hawaii if you were at the right place at the right time and prevented a mass shooting.
