Maui chrono/ long range question
« on: February 01, 2023, 10:45:01 AM »
I think I know the answer, but it doesn't hurt to ask. I should draw a couple solid elk and mule deer tags in the next several years and I'm trying to get more proficient at longer distances though practice and better equipment. The equipment part is coming along but I was wondering if...

A.) there is anywhere you can shoot further than 200 yards besides ukumehame?
B.) is there anywhere you can rent or use a chronograph to get a muzzle velocity reading?

I plan to dial in my dope through trial and error and I hunt lanai regularly but these things would probably help expedite things.

Any insight would be appreciated.

bonus question how much of a pain is it going to get 6.5 cm ELD X or ELD M on maui?

What distances are you expecting?  500+ yards?

Can't help you with shooting stuff on Maui.  However, I do have a bunch of Hornady ELD-M 147 gr I can send you.  I also have a bunch of 140 gr ELD-M, but was planning to use them this year.  They should both be readily available though.  Let me know if you aren't able to find online and I can see what I can spare from my stash.  I don't plan to shoot the 147 gr ELD-M much moving forward.  That said, ELD-Ms are not recommended for hunting (like the ELD-X).

I do have some factory Hornady Superformance 129 SST (4 boxes, 80 rounds), but you'd have to fly to Oahu to pick them up.  :(

Having harvested elk in WA state,
200 meters is about all you'll need.
Most the time they are way closer, if you do it right,
Keep in mind y'all have to haul them out.
Shoot one on a ridge and watch it roll down into to valley floor.
Killing is the easy part.

I've seen a bunch of hunting shows where they were having shots in the 600-800 yard range.  But of course, had lots of ads for stuff like rifle scopes and "precision" rifles.

I have buddies in AK that do the Dall sheep hunting.  That terrain is crazy!

Y'all still have to haul the animal out.
even if you de-bone it is a lot of work.
Smart guys have horses or mules but that is a level of hunting most city folk
don't do.
My opinion it is that it is the best.
But then I've hunted in wilderness areas.
DaKine where modern machines aren't allowed.

no will be an az late rifle tag or wy early season tag  so far shots are certainly possible especially in az on the late rifle but I have both a 30-06 and 6.5cm so I have options as to which one i;d take. I am not dumb either I dont shoot things at the bottom of holes
