WTF? Residents taxed because they go to Vegas?

A controversial bill heading through the Hawaii State Senate is going after one of the popular vacation destinations for Hawaii residents - Las Vegas.

Popular enough to be nicknamed the '9th Island,' studies estimate people from Hawaii take 300,000 trips annually to Las Vegas and other gambling destinations, and that Boyd Gaming, which owns popular spots for Hawaii guests like the California Hotel & Casino and Main Street Station is estimated to bring in about $600 million from Hawaii each year.

It's why State Senator Stanley Chang (D-Hawaii Kai, Kahala) wants to see some of that money brought back to the state. In Senate Bill 935, the bill says "Hawaii residents generate hundreds of millions of dollars, perhaps billions, in economic activity in other jurisdictions related to gambling, and in return, Hawaii receives no benefit."

Maybe they should legalize gambling here if they want the revenue.   Limit it to Maui since I never go there. Traffic is bad enough on Oahu and the BI, the two islands I frequent.  The other islands are too small or lack sufficient hotels.

I look forward to Nevada giving Mr. Chang a remedial education on state borders and jurisdiction.

It's like they WANT people to move away...
If the cost to buy LV travel packages isn't low enough, travelers will just book air travel and rooms themselves.

And when the travel companies no longer exist, Hawaii loses the corporate taxes, excise taxes on sales, and income taxes from employees.

When you want less of something you tax it.

When you want more of something, you subsidize it.

Chang wants to see that money used for treatment for gambling addiction.
"I'm not saying that gambling is inherently evil," Chang says. "But what I am
saying if that there is a certain percentage of gamblers that do become
addicted and we have to deal with the societal impacts of that - crime, job
loss, and to pretend that it doesn't exist in Hawaii, that's a real problem,"
Chang says.

It's unclear where that new tax revenue would go specifically, but Chang
says as it stands now, Hawaii doesn't have any state-funded gambling
addiction programs, and that gambling addicts in the state have to rely on
national hotlines.   Hawaii and Utah are the only two states without any
form of legalized gaming.

Ironically, treating gambling addiction & the cost to Hawaii society (crime) are among the biggest arguments against legalizing gambling in the islands.

Welcome to the new world, where we tax-paying residents have to pay for the bad effects of things we want but don't exist here, i.e. casinos.

In other words, you can't legislate morality or responsibility.  Banning gambling doesn't stop people from gambling, or else there would be no revenue on Vegas travelers to tax.

If gambling were okay here, at least there would be jobs, more tourists, fewer residents trotting off to Vegas as often, and a steady tax income for the state via casinos.

The cost to treat gambling addiction would be paid for through those casino taxes without going after companies that offer travel packages.

My theory is that since Chang is a junior legislator this is his way to signal to the gambling lobby that he wants in on their "influence". Influence him enough so that he'll stop introducing bills like this.

Typical junior legislator trying to make a name for him, her, itself.

The best part is when he said the money generated MAY go to treat gambling addiction.

A f**kn tax on gamblers going to Vegas MAY go to addiction instead of WILL go to treat addiction.

I tell you, the mindset of Hawaii and the "party  ::)" that dominates government is totally f**ked up beyond repair.

They know the majority of people here will accept anything the "party  ::)" says and tells them to do.

People who think this tax will go to addiction are the same people who blindly vote for whoever the candidate with the D next to their name is, or they just don't vote at all.

Stupidest proposal in the midst of so many important pressing issues so far.

Gambling is already here, either you don't get out much or don't know "somebody".
Gambling machines are all over the place, even the little stop & go in Hauula and its easy to find a chicken fight, crap game or Majhong if you know that "somebody".

This Chang guy is really full of shiite.  Other states that has a portion of gambling tax put aside for addiction is states that has allowed gambling in their state.

Hawaii has no legalized gambling.  People need to pay airfare just to get off this rock.  It's another story if we had gambling here in Hawaii.  Then gambling addiction becomes a real problem to address.

In my opinion, gamblers in Hawaii are often senior citizens on retirement that love to go to Vegas.  Yes, they and others in Hawaii have the gambling bug but I would hardly call that addiction.

The people who frequent the illegal gambling backrooms and chicken fights here in Hawaii are the real addicted ones.  Go after these establishments and people and fine them to fund the gambling addiction.

Those of us who frequent Vegas are not considered addicted gamblers in my opinion.

Again this Chang guy is full of shiite and just wants another way to bring revenue into the state and garnish the attention of gov. Greed and his cronies.  Maybe he wants to show he deserves to be "one of them".  Once you establish that you have a job forever.

Hoo boy.  Lots of news lately have me riled up but not so much as this one, LOL!

Talk about stupid politics and stupid politicians.

Let's say illegal vs. legal gambling in Hawaii isn't the issue.

The bill would be taxing the businesses which are facilitating LEGAL gambling vacations to pay for the effects of ILLEGAL gambling -- because illegal gambling can feed more locals' addictions than having to fly to the mainland.

Either way, the bill is nonsense.

And, as we all know, it won't be the businesses paying any new taxes.  Those costs will be passed on to the customers.

I would go to Vegas for the food, entertainment, hot chicks, and religious worship, not gambling. Chang the Merciless will be slapped down in the Supreme Court for violating the First Amendment. I worship the female body as part of my religion, braddah.  :shaka:
