Strange range behavior
« on: May 13, 2023, 09:11:50 PM »
Went to range today with son. Had a guy with a strong accent come and start telling us if we could shoot 1 handed. He kept telling me that me and my son should shoot 1 handed. He was there with 2 other guys. Kept asking me if that was a 357. He then proceeded to ask me if he could shoot it with his own ammo. I decided to leave.
He then asked if he could  hold it. Not wanting to be rude I agreed. I don’t know why he kept pushing my son should try 1 handed. Seems like he wanted to prove something. If he reloads then why would he need to shoot someone else’s gun. The revolver is a common ruger. Weird.

I didn't catch that his ammo were reloads when he asked to use your gun with his ammo.  After you mentioned reloading, it's even better that you left.

I'd never use someone else's hand-loads in my gun, much less a stranger's.

You have no idea if it's extra- or double-charged, and the results could be a damaged firearm, serious injury and death.  Even if the components are properly measured, if he's using reloaded cases, it could have a defect and cause damage.

I'd have told him that's a rule I have.  Reloads carry a risk, and I'm not willing to accept that risk unless I personally reloaded the rounds.  That goes double if i don't know the person at all.

My other rule is to never let someone i don't know shoot my firearms.   So, even if he offers to pay you to use your factory loaded ammo, it's still trusting a stranger with your firearm and with no clue whether he's a safe and knowledgeable shooter.

I won't know what experience level he is, and handing him something he's never shot before would be my fault if anything happened.

I wouldn't worry about being rude at the range.  When something goes wrong there it can be super-serious.

I have to wonder about someone who even asks a stranger to shoot their revolver without being invited first.

Strange indeed.
I wouldn't let someone I don't know shoot their ammo in my gun.

Should have asked the RSO if they know the guy and if not to keep and eye on him.

Gotta watchout for suicides too.  People could go to the range, ask if they can shoot a gun, then kill themselves.  Look for warning signs.  If they're shooting their own gun at the range then it wouldn't be the case.

I’m kinda mad at myself for not being more direct but I didn’t want to seem  unfriendly. He also said my son could do push-ups .They were wearing bright shirts and leather pants, definitely not from here.

There was a news report of a woman at a range rented a gun for her and her son.  At some point she turned the gun on her son and killed him.  Then she took her own life.  It was all caught on the security camera.

Apparently, Florida is the place where people use rented guns to off themselves.

Officials identify man, woman shot at Holly Hill gun range as part of 'suicide pact'
Quote
On Friday, officials released more information on a "suicide pact" shooting that killed a
woman and injured a man.

Holly Hill police identified the couple as 21-year-old Ayadilis Chalas and 23-year-old Alec
Matthew Almanzar. Police say they lived together in Ormond Beach.

Police say the couple went to the Hot Shot shooting range around 5 p.m. and rented a
9mm pistol.

I don't let strangers shoot my firearms
And I never ask to shoot a strangers firearm
There are occasions that I will let a stranger shoot my firearms, like the 2A revolver day, or a friend of a friend.

I mentioned this earlier here but when I took the handgun safety course the instructor shared a story of when he was working at KHSC.

This quiet guy was just watching others shoot.  Then he asked someone if he could see and handle his firearm.  Not sure how precisely the story went from here but the guy ended up killing himself.  Not sure if he loaded the firearm himself or it was already loaded.

Suicide.

You don't want that sh*t on your plate.  Best not to lend or let handle your firearm to strangers.

I am sure we all have stories of strange people at the range
I remember a while back on the silly side, 2 guys shooting, 1 guy obviously not an experienced shooter, wearing the full on tactical clothing and gear. He even wore a tactical vest. Reminded me of Paul Blart mall cop

Sorry to hear this guy and his friends ruined your range day for you and your son.  It seems he was trying to start something and testing your patience, especially with the comment about your son to do pushups. Pretty scary situation with loaded guns everywhere. Any other behavior besides courteous and friendly at a public shooting range,  I myself would be extremely bothered and worried especially if I had my kids there with me. I think you made the right decision in not being more direct and being polite and then leaving because who knows what might have happens if you told him off as he may have been on the edge about somthing. Just not worth being in a fight or possible shootout.

Tactical gear on a person that looks like Paul Blart Mall Cop is strange indeed.  I mean, you gotta ask "Why??!!"

Work on the spare tire first before attempting to go tactical.  I say this from someone who had 2 spare tires, lol!!

I was chatting to a guy on FB, someone I never met before.  Said he was in the military and wanted to be a firearms instructor and start his own business.  We take a local training class together.

On training day, we link up.  He's all kitted out, the only one.  Ballistic helmet, ballistic face shield (the one inch think kind), goggles, tactical vest, plates, side plates, gloves, everything else.  I look at him and I'm thinking should I tell him.  For all I know maybe he can run 10 miles in that stuff.  So I just tell him maybe you should start out light, get used to the training first.  He says he was in the military and he trains with that stuff, he can handle.

Hour later heat casualty.  Not to mention muzzle discipline issues.  He may have had some mental disabilities.
