What is the penalty for officials lying to the public?  They want to penalize the public to lying to officials. C&C Bill 44

Penalty?

Very few people are going to ride the rail as it is designed. If they wanted a big ridership it should have been built at ground level with more stations and run all the way to Waikiki and UH.

But then the rail would cost $100B instead of the current projected cost of $12.4B, which everyone knows will end up at $15B because of “unanticipated delays and expenses.”

https://www.khon2.com/skyline/hawaii-rail-could-cost-taxpayers-54-per-passenger/

It costs $3 to ride Honolulu’s rail system, but taxpayers could be shelling out a lot more for operating costs.

A local nonprofit crunched the numbers and said it is the most expensive rail system in the country per passenger.

The operational budget for Skyline is about $85 million every year. The highest day of ridership during the opening week of rail was 4,312 passengers, and the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii said taxpayers will pay $51 per passenger if that continues.

“If you think about it, yes, riders are paying $3; but taxpayers are paying the other $50,” said Grassroot Institute of Hawaii executive vice president Joe Kent.

Lol, all I know is that on Wednesday, while on H-1 during morning commuter traffic the Skyline (ooooh....skyline.....) train passed overhead.

F*ckn train (I mean, skyline....ooooooh....) looked EMPTY except for maybe 3 people on the last tram.

Oh excuse me.  I meant skyline.  (oooooh....)

The rail was great,  I think once it hits town we will see good ridership levels.

They're doing damage control. This mornings news said that once the rail is 100% operational, it will be the cheapest rail in the nation.

Same people who told us how much it would cost, how long construction would take, how much traffic it would eliminate from roadways, etc., etc.?

Latest estimate for 100% operation of The Rail is 2031.  Who's paying the bills for the next 8 years?

End of second week of rail opening. Traffic still bad. Rail made no difference in traffic. That was the reason for the rail right? Oh but the rail management team that pay themselves well with our tax monies want us to wait till the school year starts before we assess? So if I buy a $250k Lamborghini and it only goes up to max 50mph in 5 minutes I should wait till the break-in period of 90 days for it to reach its "maybe" max potential before I return it and get a refund? C'Mon Man?! I'm serious!
If I wanted to joy ride I'd go for the Pearlridge Mall rail. Been in operation since the 80s. Cheaper. Not a $10 billion joy ride with taxes forever into the next generations.

Did you even ride it before you judged?

Maybe if it came up to Mililani and ran to at least one location I really need to visit regularly, ...

I'm not a sheep, needing to be herded into a cattle car and transported to wherever "they" decided I need to be.  I've ridden mass transit trains and subways in Maryland/DC and Japan.  If you're going somewhere the train's going and don't need to take anything of significant bulk or weight, then it's convenient.  Even better if you can avoid the rush hour sardine experience.

But, if you do most of your grocery shopping every other week, run to Home Depot for lumber and other large items, have to be somewhere at a given time outside the rail's operating schedule, or have to drive to the closest station, pay for parking, and drive back home again, I'd say I'm not required to ride it to form an opinion.

It's not made solely for you.   But you judged the rail without even using it.   Public transport is an important part of government duties.  Just because you appear to dislike the government doesn't mean you can baselessly judge the rail.  Atleast do the courtesy of riding it once.   Some people can't afford cars for transportation or don't want to drive in traffic.   When the rail reaches town it will enable groups of people who live near to travel without driving. And make it much easier for those who currently use the bus. Hopefully it will lessen traffic to the west improving the lives of people who don't use it.

How often do you ride the rail? Is it part of your commute to work?
About 25,000 people live in Mililani. https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/mililanitowncdphawaii
25,000 not served by the rail.

You gotta envision the future.

How much is this future of the rail going to cost us? WHEN will it be feasible for residents of Oahu to make it one of their PRIMARY mode of transportation? The tax is indefinite at this point - with the current HART director sitting on a protracted project, saying that to get it back on track to its original route we need more taxes?! The single reason the rail was built was to alleviate traffic. So to fund this project they raised the GE tax instead of targeting the center of gravity of this whole problem - vehicles. They should have laid the tax on vehicles. Instead they laid the tax on the Island of Oahu - whether you own a car or not - whether you pursue other modes of transportation that don't contribute to gridlock.

The vision for rail was grand and noble when it was born. Through the years greed distorted it and gave us this half-baked solution that is stifling economic growth and laid a burden on generations after us.
