3D printer background check?
« on: October 17, 2023, 09:43:26 PM »

===========
A bill introduced in the New York state assembly last week aims to combat the spread of 3D printed "ghost guns" by requiring a criminal background check for anyone buying a 3D printer.…

The bill, A8132, was introduced by state senator Jenifer Rajkumar last week, and would require a background check for any 3D printer sold in the state of New York that's capable of printing a firearm or components for them, such as auto sears that turn semi-automatic weapons into full-auto machine guns, receivers, and the like.

Then they will start selling 80% 3d printers where you have to finish the printer yourself....

Which would mean a felon wouldn't be able to buy a 3D printer, even if for work purpose or other hobby purposes.  I hope this passes. NY sucks and I wanna see the 3D printing community protest.

So, will drill presses, drill bits, routers & bits, plasma cutters, CNC machines, lathes and other milling machines be next?

They all can be used to create "unlawful" firearm parts.

What about machines purchased for professional machining businesses?  Nothing stopping the employees and owners from using them to manufacture firearm-related parts.  Are they all going to need background checks?  If they fail the check, who's going to provide them with a living outside of their experience and training as machinists?

People from both sides claim how easy it is to produce a complete firearm from FDM  machines. No. The article shows an image of a pistol with no supports what so ever. Not possible.

Then they will start selling 80% 3d printers where you have to finish the printer yourself....
Already done. Prusas come assembled, semi or kit form.

Theres limitations to FDM. Its extremely challenging  to make a  functional, reliable pistol thats cheaper than a simple Glock or a fugly HiPoint.

When HPD testified against P80's they said it cost them $850 to make 1.  They didn't mention the cost of tools or labor one uses.  But a pistol off the black market is much less and probably more reliable if it's not a P80 type.

The Lucky Striker shooter used a P80 and it jammed after the 1st or 2nd round.
