Intelligence vs. Education
« on: November 09, 2023, 01:14:08 PM »
This is a small sample size, but it illustrates the biases toward getting advanced degrees to be "competitive" in the workplace versus having aptitude, problem solving skills, adaptability, and so on.

Semi-spoiler alert:  Ranking based on academic achievement are a bit different than their IQ test scores.

(The title kind of gives that much away)

the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

I managed a bank with employees who where at UH and in the school of business.  All A students. Plus a RN student who was a B student.  But when it came to make decisions on their own or figure ways to get things done, I would give them all a F.  It seemed like they were only good at studying and memorization. None had the ability to think for themselves on how to solve a problem.

Compare this to the people who didn't have a college education, all but a few were able to work autonomously and think for themselves.

Faster IQ test.
Give me 6 identical Toyota Corollas  each with a rear right flat tire and see who can change it fastest.

I worked in the field in construction.  Electrician.  I've had co-workers who were so smart, super smart and had degrees in electrical engineering.

I've had co-workers who claimed to be master electricians.  Workers who claimed to be electricians on nuclear submarines.

They were smart.  Super smart.  And there definitely is a place for these gifted people.

But we were working high rise buildings.  There, street smarts and MacGyver talent is more useful.  Knowing how to think while on the run and improvise when textbook strategies won't work.

Sorry to say in this kind of environment they fell flat on their face.

But again, dos fackahs were smaat.

I believe the old adage, it is not what you know, but who you know is very true.  No need be smart to get way ahead in life. I present Kamala Harris and Joe Biden as proof of that statement.

Oh yes.  I've seen countless kamalas and joe's throughout my lifetime.  And spent endless hours fixing their f*ck-ups.

So happy that all of that crap is behind me and I'm out to pasture and retired.

It’s not what you know. It’s who you know.
I know plenty people who send their kids to private school to build the network.
Also stevedores, Pearl Harbor, etc.
Who you know.

She looks like a feminine Ben Shapiro. Even her mannerisms.
Thought that was humorous.

Wrote memorization is certainly not intelligence but there are many different types of intelligence, each with their own benefits. Being able to analyze something critically doesn't mean you have a lot of specific knowledge about anything but it is very useful in any area of life. This is why you can still have smart people join cults/cults of popularity, they may know things but can't analyze things.

That PHD may be smart in some way but her smugness being crushed is so gratifying.
