Why I don't buy too expensive EDC stuff
« on: November 13, 2023, 02:45:01 PM »
Had to order another Streamlight ProTac.  Had this one for about 5 years.  Prior to this, I lost 1 in Vegas around the video poker area at the airport. I had the light on me then, but when I sat in my seat on the plane, I didn't have it.  I dind't sit down elsehwere either but went straight from the video poker to the gate to board.

This time, I think it fell out of my pocket when riding a bicycle to work.  Good thing the replacement on Amazon is $35. IIRC, I paid $40-50 for the prior 2 from SEC.  Imagine if I had a $100 light.

Same reason why my folding knife is $60. If I spent $300 on 1, I wouldn't want to use it to cut card board or open a can of paint.  Range knife is even cheaper.

There's an alternate theory to having expensive EDC items:

The more it costs, the more likely you'll keep up with it.

i used to use the "free" gov't-supplied pens.  Even though I grabbed a dozen whenever I needed another, I never seemed to have a pen on me.  I would loan it and/or leave it wherever.

When I became a civilian contractor, I made the decision to buy a nice, expensive Cross pen and pencil set.

I used that set for 7 years until the pen accidentally took a bath in the clothes washer.  Even though the pen still wrote, the mechanism to extend and retract it was screwed.  So, I bought a replacement -- same set, different color exterior.  I still have them 18 years later.

If someone borrowed it, you bet your a$$ I didn't let them walk away with it!

Just a thought.

How’s your spiritus Fanny pack holding up? Is it too small for other edc items? Was looking at the Eberlestock bando Fanny pack

Considering I wasn't using signed contracts to make my living, that's a totally different thing.

If that were me, I would have a cheaper pen for the signing, but one that is sort of nicer than a Bic -- although Bic does make some nice Gel models.

I'd probably use one that has my company info on it, just for the advertising write-off.

Problem is going cheap usually means going chinese.

I think two maybe suggestions I would have:
1. Quality pocket clips. Knives or flashlights, ones with good clips are going to be less likely to fall out
2. Consider a storage pouch. I was thinking about getting one from these guys, expensive but would hold stuff well.
https://taleofknives.com/collections/single-clips
3. For my EDC light I have a small rechargeable that takes a single CR123. Since it is small I can put it deep in the pocket without it feeling cumbersome like a full size combat light.

I have actually lost more sunglasses than knives. I think the only knife I ever lost carrying was in college when I left it in the locker room.

I used to buy Craftsman screw driver sets from this place called Sears. For whatever reason, I would end up losing the sizes I use the most and buy another set for about ten or twenty bucks. About fifteen years ago I bought a set from the Snap-on truck for around $280. Those screw drivers have had a lot of use on them and I still have the complete set . . . knocking on wood.

But seriously, for me, I have lots of small knives and little li-on pocket size lights. The reason is that I alternate between different color shorts and pants. Since I don't do much dirty work, my clothes don't get dirty. Therefore I have a knife and a flashlight in many different sets of clothing all at the same time. Then I don't have to keep transferring the edc stuff when I decide to change clothes.

My favorite little knife is a ball bearing eafengrow with a tanto style blade. Maybe $20.

I used to buy broken Craftsman screwdrivers at garage sales for a quarter.  When I had accumulated a bunch I'd exchange them at Sears for new ones.  You can never have enough #2 Phillips ...

Ah yes, the Federali Skilcraft ball point pen - good for scratching holes in paper.  A few years ago we picked up some Skilcraft gel pens from the GSA Store and they were surprisingly good.

Works. Its sole purpose is to only hold mag/pistol. But it can hold either POM or the protac light with the mag in that section.

The bando is nice, but looks too bulky.

You wear it like a Fanny pack on your waist or sling bag?

Ever notice gov't-procured packaging for light bulbs?

Manufactured by Lighthouse for the Blind

I always wondered ... who tests the bulbs?

I switched from the maxpedition fanny to the bando and pretty happy with it. Barely fits a glock 19 but the opening creates a much easier draw than most regular fanny packs if you use it for a firearm.

The maxpedition was bigger so I would carry more and then it got heavy

Expensive is subjective
What someone thinks is expensive, someone else will think is affordable
My choice is a comfortable medium. I dont like too cheap or too expensive, but something that is of acceptable quality and not too expensive
For example knives. I got some cheap ones and not so cheap ones. For knives I have a priority list that I like. Now, I accept that what I like may cost 100-300 dollars. I'm not willing to go much over that
I don't like a cheap knife that has poor quality and poor performance just to save many
One of my EDC blades in my rotation is my $400 ZT. I carry it about once a week. It's one of my favorite knives. I'm not going to dig in the dirt with it but I will use it for light duty which is my primary use for an EDC blade. Then I clean it and place on its storage pouch until next time

Waist.  But it's uses specifically when I leave the home with our infant and I may carry her.  So if we leave just to grab take out food, then I don't use it. But dine in or long shopping, then I use it.
