I may have to reprioritize my list of retirement locations.

Vegas seems to have a higher than average pool of nutjobs.

Vegas is still on our list. But to be fair, we spend more time here than any other locations on our list. HI is def not on the list.

It's an unusual shooting.  An older highly educated active shooter.  Haven't seen a person go active shooter being denied a job. You have no ties or commitment to the job and normally it's a whatever I'll try someplace else thing.

Fortunately the casualties are low but that is also odd.  Makes it seem selective and like a personal vendetta.

Does UH have armed security?

Up to 2010, no.

They did recently around then install these blue lighted call boxes. So if you're walking and need a secrutiy escort somewhere, you go to the blue light and call and security will show up.

The shooter who killed three people Wednesday at the University of Nevada,
Las Vegas, was a 67-year-old career college professor who may have applied
for a job at the university but not been hired, a law enforcement source told CNN.

The gunman died at the scene after a confrontation with police outside a university
building, Las Vegas Metro Sheriff Kevin McMahill said. He was identified as
Anthony Polito, that source and another source in law enforcement said.

Investigators are looking into the possibility Polito may have been passed over for a
job at UNLV, the first law enforcement source said. The investigative theory on a
possible motive is Polito had sought a position there but was not hired, the source said.

Polito had worked for schools in Georgia and North Carolina, his LinkedIn page shows,
listing his most recent full-time employment as a business professor at East Carolina
University
, a position which ended in 2017.

ECU is where I earned my Computer Science degree and was commissioned through AFROTC.

i wonder if he was fired, the position was cut by the school, or he just quit.  If he was let go by ECU, one would think that would have set him off before being turned down by UNLV.

My thought is that jobs are readily available nowadays.
Therefore if he was denied a position, he must have had some pretty serious negative characteristics....that might be an understatement.

Read something about that this incident is not like the more "common" type of mass shooting where the shooter is a sick f*ck and has mental issues.

The victims were not students but rather faculty types.

Maybe this guy was at the borderline and somebody made a comment or did something that sent him over the edge.

Instead of the slow to boil type of person this guy just snapped.

Heres some info on NV.

NV has constututional open carry
Issues CCW with minimal effort. Take an approved class and ALL the instructors are on the Metro website with contact info. The shooting qual can be done with any caliber pistol, including 22. Their CCW is valid for all handguns owned. Unlike HI, you have to find out who's approved and qual with the specific gun.
NV law doesn't allow guns on school property without permission. So even if federally, you can CCW with a NV CCW at UNLV, you must get permission from them.
NV has no mag limits
Any gun transfers/sales must go thru a FFL, except if to family.
NV doesn't do any type of mental health check, which is 1 reason why WA has no reciprocity with them. WA requires some kind of mental health check.

Why this matters, Biden shortly after the shooting and others made a statement to ban "assault weapons", even though a handgun was used.  And if any of the victims were armed, maybe they could have survived, but instead others had to wait for the cops to show up. Luckily, this situation sounded like he had specific targets in mind and not just kill anyone he sees. This is a guess since only 3 were killed and 1 injured at a college campus.  And if it's anything like UH, there's way more people than that around.

Purely speculating here but maybe he had a gambling problem.  And being denied the job made him snap due to his debt.

Again just speculating.  Hopefully more information comes out.  Not like the Paddock shooter.

Curious to know if the dude was on anti-depression drugs.
Doing something like that is almost certainly suicidal.

Not to my knowledge. They drive around in cop looking cars and wear body armor, handcuffs, and other tools on their belt but I have never seen one with a firearm. They fall under the state IIRC but I don't know if they are classified as LEOs.

Police say Polito was struggling financially and had an eviction notice on his door.

I think people shouldn't read too much into the letters Polito sent out to various employees to several Universities.  There were like 20 something of them.  It could have been inquiries for job opportunities as he looked for employment.

It was stated that none of the victims of the shootings seemed to have been intentionally targeted by Polito.
