Well, the difference is you get nothing in exchange for the fireworks -- other than no criminal charges for illegal fireworks.

Or are they "undocumented" fireworks?  I can't keep all these changing terms straight!

I am amazed that fireworks have been made illegal. It doesn't seem like there is enough support if you look at how many fireworks go off on new years. Seems like a vocal minority. I wish they would put the issue on a ballot so we can actually get a representative decision on fireworks.

Where do you think you're living?  Some kind of democracy?

Our elected representatives only represent their positions and those of their party and big donors.  Public support is not a big factor.  That should be obvious with the guns laws being passed with more opposition than support.

It's already on the books that the majority of fireworks are illegal, especially the annoying aerials.

Who TF is gonna buy aerials just to turn it in 😂.  I bet there is going to be some fake news on how successful this was.  Hundreds of people turned in thousands of pounds of firework….

Somebody spends $1000 on illegal aerial fireworks.  Yeah, all of a sudden he gets a kumbaya moment and turns it in because it is wrong and illegal and a danger to his neighbors and the good people of Hawaii.  Never mind that he just spent the family's milk money and won't get a dime back.

What will work is if the amnesty program also mentions that increased resources will be used to ramp up patrols and that a commitment will be made to prosecute those caught.

But that won't happen.  Wouldn't surprise anyone that the ones setting off these illegal fireworks are connected to the ones making the rules here in the banana republik of hawaii. :shaka:

Hawaiian islands are like small towns on the mainland.  You're either related to, went to school with, work/ed with, dated or know a good percentage of the population.

This kind of familiarity among the public and law enforcement interferes with the fair and equal application of the state's laws.

I bet there are cops sitting at home on New Year's Eve listening to their neighbors set off illegal fireworks -- or they are also setting them off (Cops get exemptions).

If you have pets and/or chronic breathing problems, it's worth the effort and resources.

If i thought this was an either/or proposition, then I would agree there are better things to tackle first.

The problem is, you have to assume the government is actually going to tackle those other problems at all.

Remove the law is what I am hoping for. I have many fond memories of New Years celebrations.
Not complete removal, I don't think the very large aerial ones should be legal for average consumers, but the smaller ones like bottle rockets, firecrackers, etc.
