Even though Vegas is changing, and for me it's for the worse, I need to change also.
I need to change how I visit Vegas. Because as much as I grumble and lament for the Vegas of old, I know it will never come back.
But I still like to go, albeit not as much as I used to.
Here are the things I'm thinking of changing on how I do Vegas:
Stay at a Property that has a lot of amenities: Dining, entertainment, shopping, and gambling. Red Rock Casino and Green Valley Resort comes to mind.
Play less live craps and more of those machine bubble craps. Last trip I've become irritated at the availability of live tables (mgt. refuses to open more tables) and the players with under-funded bankrolls taking up space and not really placing bets.
Play more Video Poker, although after a while this game bores me.
Try Video Keno.
Include some destination type restaurants for dining. We usually just eat at buffets, cafes, or food courts. We should add a nice Italian or American Steakhouse in the mix.
See a show or two. We used to watch shows but lately the shows on the Strip are not interesting for us as we are older and don't even recognize any of the performers.
But the Off-Strip properties have shows of has-been performers and groups with ticket prices less than astronomical prices. Those should be fun to watch as these has-beens re-live their glory days.
Rent a car for a day or two. This one I'm still struggling with. I hate to drive. More so in Vegas. But having a car can enhance your visit. I still like to visit places like Sam's Town on the Boulder Hwy. and the Orleans. Also wanted to visit the Durango, a small new casino owned by Stations.
Or maybe do all of the above but at Downtown. The Plaza has some old-fart shows and I think Four Queens and The D also has some shows. Instead of camping out at the craps table like I usually do we can visit other casinos. El Cortez is re-vamping some of their casino areas and maybe we can stay at the Downtown Grand. I see on YouTube they got some great deals.
We'll see. All of this is moot if wife and I can't get away from watching the grandkids.....
The last part is funny. We only go when my parents can babysit our daughter since you cannot gamble with a toddler next to you. So I gotta broker a deal for us to go. Same goes with range days.
We just got a MGM credit card. What this allows is automatic pearl status and it's main benefit is free pakring at all MGM properties. We always rent a car and sometimes go a day or 2 without even using it. It's nice to have as we do go off strip a lot and now with the MGM card, we don't have to walk from Palazzo to Cosmo anymore. But during F1, it would be better to walk.
We enjoy the strip as it's a vacation. RR and GVR are nice but it's main downside is there's no other casino in walking distance. So if the tables are cold, then you have no other optios. Also, the on property is OK. But on the strip, you can just walk next door to get diff food.
We enjoy Palazzo/Venetian. They have $15 tables during the day, but at night it's hit or miss at $25. I haven't been to GVR at night for a while, what are their table mins?
On property has lots of good dining:
Tao
Spicy tuna on crispy rice
Black garlic butter steak
Lobster wonton w/mushroom broth are our favs.
Chipotle at the food court
A new food hall
Sushi Samba has many good dishes.
Also, they're generous on room comps.
