We're people always housed in hotels and apartments after major disasters?  Or did they use to stay in tents and gyms and warehouses?

imagine you own a piece of land, a house, a car or any other high value property while complete strangers stand outside your home protesting, because they think you should use it differently than you want.  This is Socialism in action.

What you own is not yours, but the government's -- and they get to decide how it will be used.   :wtf:

I bet many of the owners obtained mortgages on those properties based on anticipated revenue from tourists.  Forcing them to accept long term residents will result in lower rents, which might be inadequate to service the loans on their properties plus cover maintenance, repairs, overhead costs and taxes.  I expect some will wind up selling the properties or lose them to the tax man or bank.

i'm reminded of Hurricane Katrina.  Thousands of people lost their homes in the storm and floods and were forced to seek housing wherever they could.

They moved to other states and found new jobs.  If they had insurance it was banked and used to start life elsewhere.  Most never returned to New Orleans.  They abandoned their flood-damaged homes and personal goods. Those who had reason to return started rebuilding, but it was a slow, difficult journey.

i don't see how losing everything in a fire is any different.  There are many other places to move to temporarily other than Maui.  If you're dependent on government to house you, then you shouldn't be surprised if those accommodations aren't somewhere other than Maui.

the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.

I can't remember if Hurricane Iniki had a similar response. From what I read it was faster to rebuild. I think the hotel got 2 opportunities from government. Prepaid stays and an opportunity to leverage against one/sole competitor(s) - the vacation rental industry. We are dumb. We hate tourism but we need jobs. We rail against hotels and the like but we need their jobs.

Since the short term lodging owners are taxed at a significantly higher rate, I'd be surprised if the state/county give in to the protests.

Unless, of course, it helps them get the victims to give up their lands.

Many homes took 2 years to rebuild. Contractors built the more profitable ones first.
