Here's the HRS:

" §134-52  Switchblade knives; prohibitions; penalty.  (a)  Whoever knowingly manufactures, sells, transfers, possesses, or transports in the State any switchblade knife, being any knife having a blade which opens automatically (1) by hand pressure applied to a button or other device in the handle of the knife, or (2) by operation of inertia, gravity, or both, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.

     (b)  Whoever knowingly possesses or intentionally uses or threatens to use a switchblade knife while engaged in the commission of a crime shall be guilty of a class C felony. [L 1959, c 225, §1; Supp, §264-9; HRS §769-1; ren L 1972, c 9, pt of §1; am L 1990, c 195, §4]"
Yeah, I read that. . . where does it explicitly state spring loaded = switchblade. . .

If you and whomever you are basing your assessments on come to that conclusion, so be it. . . just saying there's more to assisted opening knives than your blanket statement.

Anything spring loaded is a switchblade.

My interpretation of “inertia” is flicking of the wrist to fire the blade to the open position.

All of my Benchrmades can be that. Plus Spydercos with the “start” of the circle.

any spring assisted folding knife I would just open carry it.  As far as the inertia opening of knifes, I'm thinking that would be the discretion of the LEO and his interpretation of the law.  I've seen guys on YouTube say that in NY, if an LEO can fling your knife open with his wrist, it's considered an automatic (switchblade), meaning he used "inertia" to open the blade whether it had a spring assist or not and they'll get arrested.

"inertia"=spring loaded.
so your interpretation…

You’re good at Google, so you know the definitions.

Definitions are so broad. Look at “device”.

"inertia"=spring loaded.

I gotcha. I am mostly clarifying what the SME here is stating as fact.

Inertia

PHYSICS
a property of matter by which it continues in its existing state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line, unless that state is changed by an external force.

Sounds like a spring

that doesn't say "spring loaded"
goalposts moved...

Spring loaded operates under the principal of inertia. No goal post moved. Goal post moved would be if I stated that the HRS states "spring loaded". Focus.

"inertia"=spring loaded.

Inertia relates to momentum; in this case, angular momentum. It has nothing to do with being spring loaded.

In that case, my mistake.  So the only thing that would make a switchblade is the button you have to push to open it?

Someone is familiar Newton’s laws. Can’t fake physics.
