Numbers continue to decline. Long term businesses shutting down. What will happen to this place if they stop coming?

We kept raping that golden goose and acting as if this is such an exotic sacred place with "tourist education" etc. People found other places to enjoy themselves. We hate tourism

Biggest mistake in my opinion was the decision to make tourism the #1 industry here.

Then greed and self interests set in.

And here we are.  A tourist destination that the tourists are wising up to and learning that it is a rip off and the beauty of the islands, especially this urban sh*thole called Oahu, is no longer interesting or worth visiting.

Hawaii is quickly becoming a "one and done" destination.  Been there.  Done that and not coming back.  Not enough to line the corrupt pockets of the Tourist Industry.

Just plant banana trees already.  Banana republik.  Might as well.  Be all you can be, LOL!

What other industry do we have?

Military is the only other industry we got.

We are an island in the middle of the ocean not much we got going.   We will never have manufacturing or resource mining, even things like tech is inconvenient.

We don't like the military here either.

Science industry. The observatories on Hawaii Island bring in significant revenue ....

Oh, wait.  Never mind.

There's agriculture.  Our sugar cane is global ....

Oh, wait.  Never mind.

We do everything we can to support the tourism trade.  The Rail takes tourists to all the best attractions, and the Super Ferry offers a better Interisland experience than flying....

Oh, wait.  Never mind.

I just can't imagine why we don't have the best economyh in the nation.    O0

It's not a mistake, this was planned for generations. It's not like gambling or more recent pakalolo was offered.

I travel thru Waikiki, Kakaako, Ala Moana often which pre covid was like 80% Asian tourist. Since covid and even now, there is way less Asian tourist.  I would make a guess like 10% Asian tourist.

What I'm seeing is more mainland haoles and blacks.  And not Europeans as much because when I'm on the sidewalk, I hear these people talking, no EU accent.

Businesses will start cutting jobs and then the FED will lower rates to loosen the money supply and stimulate the economy.  It should be a normal cycle.  It's how capitalism works. The FED's job is to smooth out the cycles because with pure capitalism we would have volatile booms and depressions.

You just described a planned economy. That's the exact opposite of how capitalism works.

Agree.

When the markets are manipulated by government monetary agencies, the economy is not as dependent on market changes to correct itself.

The reason the FED finds it necessary to raise interest rates in response to inflation is because the rates were already lowered by the FED to solve a lack of economic growth from real market activity.

Once you start manipulating the market, people expect it, causing the market to react in ways incongruent with capitalism and a free market.

Government spends most of its time trying to fight the fires they set.

I don't agree with Keynesian economics, I believe in market equilibrium.

The problem with Hawaii is that many people rely on government for help and that results in many hands reaching into your pockets. All that money collected by the government is controlled by the same dumb people in charge. They can't finish a 12 mile rail system. Too many people reaching into that rail pot. That's the problem. People need to wake up and realize that govt doesn't make money they take and give to their friends. "Oh you need help with housing ? Let's take money from those that already have housing, give some to my friends and then we will build you a tiny house."

I remember the renovation of the Wahiawa Bridge.  The one as you exit Wahiawa to go towards town.  Forget the name of that bridge but it took longer to fix the bridge than it took to build the Golden Gate Bridge.  How embarrassing.  Hawaii claimed shifting silt and foundation issues.

Mainland contractors and developers were making fun of us.
