I got stuck between 2 guys shooting 308's, one with that huge JP tank brake and the other side 2 guys shooting 308's, one standing and the other on the bench.... fricken muffs and ear plugs didn't work...

That silver JP tank brake was punishing, good thing he only shot 3 rounds at a time and rested for 15 min between each set....

Someone just told me that the 30-06 has less of a sharp recoil than the 308.... I thought the recoil was pretty much the same.....

30-06 is more of a push than a slap.  Recoil all depends on the mass/weight of the rifle, mass weight of the powder charge, and mass/weight of the projectile.

Push or no a ten pound 30-06 firing a 208 grain amax with 59grains of rl-22 has a hell of a wallop!

I ended up getting the 5R 308 and its a heavy gun.... Getting it worked on at pacific custom rifles and hope to be at the range in a month.... Doing the nasty to it...

I did shoot a hunting 308 and that bastard has a sharp hit to the chest area, but gotta say the gun was lighter than my AR....

What cleaning rods and bore guides does everyone use?

Good choice! what work exactly are you having done to it? I finally got my 5R all put together a few days ago, looking forward to getting to shoot it when I can go to the "range" sometime during the week. I'm not too keen on being around other people shooting unsupervised in the woods so the weekends are def a no go!

Getting it threaded and having the muzzle brake blended into the barrel, chamber polish, lapping the lugs, and badger bolt knob.... Didn't have to adjust head spacing as it as fine.... I guess I got lucky... Didn't have it cerakote cause I like the stainless look...

I wish there is a place to shoot further than 450....

I use a graphite/fiberglas rod for my stuff.

If you aren't already a member of SRGC, put your app in.  Maybe there are spaces open, maybe not.

While you can't necessarily take targets out at KR3, you can shoot some serious distances there.

If you want to try F-Class competition at Puuloa the ranges are 300, 500, 600 yards.  however,  muzzle breaks are not allowed.

I use the Sinclair plastic bore guide, the one specifically designed for the action and a one piece rod is a good thing to have.  Keep the crown nice and sharp, try not to bang it up while cleaning, accuracy will last longer.

Cool thanks for the info... Anyone locally sell the bore guides or I have to order online?

you can get various universal guides here locally, but IMO not as good as the Sinclair's version.  The Sinclair's has an o-ring that seals off the chamber so that the cleaning solutions of your choice don't run back into the action and mess things up.

Was thinking about getting the M80 bulk ammo at LGS, but 1000 rounds seem like a lot....

I picked up one box of Hornady's Superformance 308 165gr SST. Almost $2 a round, was that a good choice? It was the mid range price 308 ammo.

Any suggestions on ammo? Brand? Grain?

I got an REM 700 xcr in 308 . 12 twist running 175 gr golds match BTHP good results. Planning on running some 178 hornady match BTHP tho . If you don't mind me asking who helped you. Sounds very familiar.

Federal Gold Medal Match 168gr. for closer ranges, if you can find it at a decent price.  Supposed to be if your .308 doesn't shoot these, something is wrong with your .308.

I've seen some FGMM 175 at YG I think. Was like $57 for 20 rounds.... Just a bit pricey but is it worth paying that much?

Well at least everyone is paying the same price.... Hahahahaha

Would you guys suggest cheaper ammo to zero in the rifle or go straight for the good stuff?

I have the Remington 700 5r with a 20" barrel. I had a PWS muzzle brake installed to cut down on the recoil, but I tend to get a bit more attention since the report is fricken LOUD!  I can hit all of the metal plates in the back of Kokohead's range if I do my part.

I did the same with my 700PSS.  I the length is very ideal and I really like the muzzle brake.

Welcome to the club! As stated, the 700 5r is a bit partial to 175 gr. projectiles due to its 11.25:1 twist rate, but just about anything is fine if you're shooting shorter distances. I took up reloading just to curb the cost of constantly buying .308 and that is another hobby in itself that I really enjoy. Happy shooting!
