Skye Crawford recently moved to the downtown neighborhood and was shocked when he got a call from police that his car windows had been shattered.

"Nothing was taken, nothing was missing," Crawford said. "This was just an act of pure violence for no reason."

He said at least a half a dozen cars got hit at the same time.

"All of them had windows smashed, all of them had windows broken," he said.

Crawford said police described the man as homeless.

"In a pareo yelling and screaming down the block, he was just smashing cars and running rampant," he said.

He said the incident comes at an especially bad time.

"Times are tough. I don't have a lot of money," he said. "I use this car to get up and go to work and come home. That is all I have."

But he chooses to forgive.

"I don't blame this guy. He probably doesn't remember doing this," he added. "If someone had been there for this guy he probably wouldn't have been in this position in the first place. He's probably hungry, starving, freaking out."

And hopes for change.

"I grew up on aloha and I love everyone here, but it's getting hard. I just think we need to go back to helping our neighbor," Crawford said. "I really think that with a better system in place for the people below the line, we would all do better."

There IS help available for homeless people.
But THEY have to WANT to be helped.

...and that is the real problem.

Very true.  Many of them have mental issues.  Amost all of them have drug addictions.  That's why they refuse help.

The other day on Ka Uka Bvd in front of Costco there was this fellow with a cardboard sign.  It says homeless and hungry.  Please help. (Translation:$$$ not food I'd bet.)  We had homeless in Vegas refuse food we offered and wanted money ::)

Food cannot buy alcohol or drugs.

Anyway, this fellow looked pretty healthy to me.  I told my wife, I'd rather work a minimum wage job than disrespect myself like that......

yep the sign wavers are everywhere near my house. I think they live in the gulch by my house. I see shopping carts all over my neighborhood and find evidence of homeless trash-pickers every week at the park.
Some live out of their cars at the park. I have compassion for some, but not all.

The ones by Walmart have nice, modern smartphones. They should just put up their Venmo, Zelle or Paypal IDs. A few years ago in the empty parcel up by Walmart a homeless camp plugged into the backyard outlet of a house. https://www.khon2.com/news/police-open-utility-theft-case-after-random-extension-cord-found-in-residents-outlet/

At Kakaako Park, they broke into the base portion of the park lighting to tap into free electricity.
By my house the druggies destroy the park lighting to make the park dark at night in order to conceal the drug dealer activity late at night.

More than once I've been approached and asked for money to buy fuel
so a family to buy fuel to get home.
My response is "pull up to the pump and I will fill you up"
Never been taken up.
Another is "family is hungry can we have money to buy food?"
I say "lets go to the store and pick what you want, I'm buying"
never been taken up on that either.

I have no problem giving charity, But I decide the expenditure of my money for charity.
That one vehicle could have cost me 100$ in fuel and the family 100$ in food and
I would have paid it.
But if they want charity I WILL have a say in how the money is spent.
