Looking for .357 ammo
« on: July 12, 2010, 10:54:39 AM »
Aloha all!

I am in need of an economically viable source of "traditional" .357 loads.  Specifically, 158 gr. lead semi-wadcutters.  No one carries it locally, except for "cowboy action loads" which come with a premium price.

I used to stock up from Ronak at the gun shows, but since they closed shop, there's been nothing.

Anyone know of a commercial reloader on the island?

Guy selling .357 ammo on island previews. Looks like he has two types, CCI and some Black Talons.  Better snap 'em up quick. :thumbsup:

I did place an order from Cabbela's for 600 rounds of lead 158gr SWC.  Placed the order June 21.  It's been on backorder ever since.  The latest notice I received says they will be receiving more ammo on September 15.  No guarantee that my order will get filled by that batch, as it didn't get filled by their shipment for July or August.

This is, quite frankly, beginning to piss me off.  There can be no legitimate reason why something as mundane as lead .357 ammo is so freaking scarce!

Nobody likes wheel guns anymore?

How much was shipping from Cabela's? I've heard of them doing the backorder thing but never tried to order from them due presumed high shipping costs.

I am curious too. How much is shipping and how does the hazmat work out?
When they do ship it must take forever to get here.

Actually, Cabela's will not ship ammo to Hawaii, period.  I'm fortunate to have a friend who regularly uses a freight forwarding service to bring in ammo, and he offered to just stick my shipment in with his.  I'm doing it this time around as much as an experiment as anything else.  If it goes smoothly, I'll probably repeat with an order of several thousand rounds and just put this issue to rest for a couple of years.

Without the friendly assist, shipping ammo is cost prohibitive.  The companies that will do it all charge full FedEx rates plus their own handling fee.  I've spent hours on the phone with salesmen, trying to massage the weight and numbers to make it work, and it just won't.

What REALLY pisses me off, though, is that CMP can do it.  As I've mentioned elsewhere, I buy all my .30-06 from CMP because even with shipping, it costs under 65 cents per round.  And their ammo also comes FedEx.  So if CMP can get such a great deal from FedEx, why no one else?

You got that right! I hate the fact the gun shops here can have such a monopoly on ammo, powder, and primers.   :grrr: If the regular public could order, even if we had to order in bulk, it would be so much cheaper.

The guys at the trap club do that.  Once or twice a year, they do a bulk order of ammo and reloading components, bring it in by the pallet.  I chipped in once, bought 10 cases of shells.  So it is possible!

I look at at them when they first started advertising.  They have a prohibition against hazardous materials.

From the website:
Quote

Are there certain items that cannot be shipped using your service?
Like all airfreight services we have limitations on what can and cannot be sent. To ensure the safety of your packages, the following items cannot be shipped using our service:

    * Perishable goods
    * Goods requiring protection from heat or cold
    * Goods worth more than the maximum allowed declared value ($5000)
    * Artwork
    * Antiques or museum articles
    * Fragile items such as glassware or ostrich eggs
    * Jewelry, furs, precious metals
    * Stocks, bonds, cash, cash equivalents
    * Coins
    * Stamps
    * Hazardous or dangerous materials (including anything flammable, corrosive, explosive, infectious, or radioactive)
    * Firearms or fireworks
    * Tobacco
    * Liquids in quantities greater than 1 gallon or that are not packaged properly to prevent leakage
    * Live animals or plants
    * Cars
    * Boats
    * Motorcycles
    * Golf Carts
    * Tractors
    * Surfboards

That's a pretty good price!  However, it's just not what I am looking for.  Thanks for the heads-up, though!

Hi Tom,

If you don't reload, learn to reload. Get a Dillon or similar rotary press.  500 rounds per hour is easily done.

You can bring in bullet heads via USPS, flat rate boxes as long as the box weighs less than 70 pounds.

I think the CASS guys do this.  I think they reload a lot.  Best is to Ask them.

I have enough reloading stuff to stock a small store.  380acp, 9mm, 38/357, 40 SW, 41mag, 44 spl, 45 Colt, 30-06, 375 H & H and a few more.

Wife is getting on my case to DownSize.....  Just have to shoot more often.

Best is to check with the various gun clubs and what's availible at the gun shows.
   If you're not know to the clubs, you may have a problem.

Gun Show Option

Do what I do, get to the gun show First with your heavy duty portable airline rated hand truck.

Since the gun show is now being held in the Big room you have to scout fast.

When/If you find something that's at a price your feel comfortable with buy it out.  Lots of Cash helps.
   I've been known to clean out people if they have what I want at a price I'm comfortable with.

Then call the Wife/friend to pick you up out front.

Unfortunately, my Wife has expensive gun/toys taste and sometimes she gets more than I do.  :-)

I'm expecting to get nailed again at this gun show for another S & W Mountain Gun.  Yep a certain guy knows I'm a sucker for Large caliber S & W MGs.
