I paid bought a new Springfield loaded for $550.
I wasn't impressed with RIA nor with the salesman trying to say it will outshoot my Colt National Match.

No the 1911's can vary greatly and a lot of the time you are talking some smithing to get parts to fit.  IMHO pay once to get the 1911 the way you want it.  This isn't like an AR15 where it's easy to put parts on and swap things out.

This is way off base.  The 1911 was a US service weapon for decades.  Of course it is a standardized platform!  There is a milspec 1911 standard, and milspec parts are drop-in interchangeable.  Exactly like ARs.

Now, many of the companies people are endorsing have decided to move away from milspec.  So, if you choose to buy one of those, then you will be tied to custom parts and gunsmiths for modifications.  But the same can be said of ARs.
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

Really?

Let's see, 1911 regular barrel vs. bull barrel.  Not a drop in replacement from slide to slide.  AR15's...........drop in replacement.

Fitting the 1911 barrel to the front bushing.  Fitting the 1911 front bushing to the slide and to the barrel.  1911 handguards. pretty much drop in replacement.

Drop in 10-8 extended slide release did not fit on my friend's Springfield.  AR15 throw in different charging handles, battery assist devices, ambi releases, buffers, etc.

Try fitting any number of the myriad parts from a 1911 from one maker to another and you need fitting............example Ed Brown, to Nighthawk, to Les Baer, to Wilson, etc......you aren't just dropping in a main spring housing, beavertail, etc.  Even triggers need some minor fitment.  Heck there are even different cuts for the sights that you intend on putting on a 1911 slide.

The list goes on and on and on............1911 platform is infamous for needing additional fitment to get the parts to fit and work properly.............exception might be something like the Taurus 1911's where the fitment and finish is so poor that there could be enough gap to get the new parts in there.

You will notice I said nothing about a milspec 1911.  OP is asking about changing parts out and it would be a disservice to tell him everything is hunky dory and all parts will fit because that is not true.

I have a RIA M1911 in 9mm.
I went for the Tactical version over the GI because I prefer the improved beavertail and the ambi safety.

Bought it online for ~$450, shipping included. Spent the extra $$ on ammo & extra magazines and have been shooting the snot out of it every chance I get  8)
If we ever get CCW here in Hawaii, you can bet it will be on my hip!

The M1911 is a great weapon.
But if you're not careful, folks get very emotional and start dick-measuring ("My Kimber is better than your Wilson/Colt/Whatever") in a hurry.

My suggestions are free and worth about as much:

  • Identify your requirements first:
(Defending against the UN Takeover? Zombie Apocalypse? Western Societal Collapse? Or just want a good gun for HD and range days?)
  • Then ID your budget ($800 is a tidy sum for many of us).
  • Then do your research (posting here is a good start, but don't let us be your sole deciding factor).
  • Find a good gunsmith and start talking to him about what you want to do to whatever gun you eventually get.
  • Buy your gun, get some good magazines, buy some ammo and go shoot! Work at being the best shot you can be with your particular gun.

Good luck!
Post here with what you decide.

Yes to all 4.
  • Then ID your budget ($800 is a tidy sum for many of us).
$800, Check

  • Then do your research (posting here is a good start, but don't let us be your sole deciding factor).
Check..well that's where I'm at now, I went to young guns yesterday and looked at what they had, but I didn't have time to grope any of them.

  • Find a good gunsmith and start talking to him about what you want to do to whatever gun you eventually get.
I'm probably not going to do much since I don't like messing with any thing, unless it's drop in stuff that I can easily install or remove myself with the exception of sights.

  • Buy your gun, get some good magazines, buy some ammo and go shoot! Work at being the best shot you can be with your particular gun.

Good luck!

Another useful site is the M1911 forum http://forums.1911forum.com/ as well as the M1911 sub-forum in the M4 Carbine site http://www.m4carbine.net/forumdisplay.php?f=176
