what can WE do here in hawaii
« on: December 30, 2012, 10:47:46 PM »
as far as say, a protest?  could we possibly get the numbers to make an impactful protest?

i think its something we should consider.  if this really is to be the possible final battle, lets do something.  will we change minds in hawaii?  probably not enough for our reps to vote the right way.  but a visible protest might change the attitudes of some people, and maybe it might make a ripple in the national media.

i would say what we can do is

Keep up to date on possible upcoming legislature
Write in daily and email our representatives letting them know we dont want new laws, we wont vote them in again, etc
If you havent already, sign up for email notifications to submit testimony (written and in person).  This makes the largest impact, IMO.  Imagine if all the people that showed up to waive signs showed up to submit testimony.  That would say something.
Also we can make donations, monetary and time/effort  to organizations, NRA, HRA, HDF, etc, etc.
Get current firearms owners updated about what is happening, spread the word to those who might not know
Get new people interested in a new sport (firearms)
Talk to people.

just sent this to all HI legislators:

i am emailing you in opposition to any and all bills that further restrict our right to own firearms
the right to bear arms is protected by the second amendment to the US constitution
and HI laws are already amongst the most restrictive in the nation
since the violent crime rate is very low in HI, i see no need to further restrict our rights and add to the already onerous registration process

i do support legislation proposed by Senator Sam Slom (R-9)
- Senate Bill 262 will authorize chiefs of police to issue licenses to openly carry a firearm.
- Senate Bill 274 will amend the current law pertaining to concealed carry licenses to make Hawaii a shall-issue state.
- Senate Bill 293 provides that the justified use of force shall limit a person's civil liability as it relates to a perpetrator who suffers injury or death, provided that, if injured, the offender is ultimately convicted of a crime.

and Representative Calvin Say (D-20)
- House Bill 603 would allow the use of deadly force when protecting one's primary dwelling against an intruder. This measure would also exempt the actor from civil liability.

these bills will increase public safety by ensuring that lawful, peaceful citizens are able to protect themselves and others from criminals that are already carrying firearms illegally right now

just sent a personal note to a rep that i know from high school (he was a teacher):

i am writing to our legislators in support of bills that promote public safety by enabling law-abiding citizens to lawfully carry firearms
these bills level the playing field as criminal illegally carry weapons while they prey on the public
i am also writing in support of bills that limit liability for lawful citizens that are defending themselves from criminal behavior
these bills keep criminals from suing those that they are victimizing if the are injured or killed during commission of a crime

i am also writing in strong opposition to any and all bills that limit our rights to own firearms
these bills will add to an already onerous and costly (to the registrant and the city/state) process and will do little or nothing to improve public safety
as you may know, the gun laws here are already very restrictive, and making them stronger in reaction to recent events on the mainland will not prevent criminals and mentally ill people from obtaining firearms
they will only serve to limit the lawful ownership of firearms, which is in direct opposition to our rights as outlined in the second amendment of the US constitution

I like how you wrote that, but did you send it in, exactly like that?  The reason I ask, is because many words weren't capitalized, and there were some punctuation errors.  I'm not trying to criticize, it's just that I think a lot of these politicians, might not take it as seriously as they would, had it been proofread, before being submitted.  Also, do you mind if I use it, as well?  I'm not good at writing these types of things.   :shaka:

Perhaps we can have someone that is good with grammar, proofread it, and post it back up?  That way, everyone can just copy and paste it.

Nice job.  Keep emailing and calling and submitting online testimony.     Showing up in person makes a statement as well.

When you submit online testimony, do you know if you have to actually upload a video or word document?  Or can you just type it in the comments section?  Sorry if my question seems dumb.  I'm pretty new to all of this.

you can upload a document or video
but you don't have to

you can put something in the comments box
but you don't have to

you can just check "oppose" or "support"
then you need to confirm your submission and agree to the privacy policy

That's a good question.    The biggest thing is to click oppose.
