Renewing CCW
« on: October 08, 2024, 08:54:25 AM »
I was thinking of renewing my CCW since it expires in late October. I realized it will cost a fortune.
$200 basic safety course (I took mine over 8 years ago)
$200 for CCW certification
$150 for registration at HPD
Total of $550 or $137.50 a year.  (The yearly breakdown is easier to swallow)

What are some of your thoughts?

I know it's only justifiable to the person carrying. Everyone has their reasons. For me, I just carried it a total of 12 times this past year (an average of once a month)

Too bad not many cared to submit testimony when they were in process of changing the law.

CMO66, Did you renew?  I know before you mentioned that you were not going to do it.

I didnt' renew. I re applied.

No one was really sure how HPD was going to handle the change, so I didn't want to waste time only to have to re-do it. I know 1 guy who did renew it prior to 2023 ending and under the old rules/law and his renewal was valid for only 1 year, even though they issued it in Jan 2024 with an issue date of 12/2023. Seems like HPD purposely had the issue date in 12/2023 so they didn't have to do the 4 year license with him.

Rocky had a combined training, "$200 + $50 Range fee" but class currently not scheduled.
https://2ahawaii.com/index.php?topic=54752.0

Class available at other Gun Stores.

90 days prior to your LTC expiring, you can re-apply (considered a new application, $150 cash), not sure how many firearms can be included on each application.
The Officer mentioned if you if you renew, (think he said 30 days?), there is a related reduced cost.  Sorry don't remember the days and cost $.

Rocky offers a combo class for about $250. HRA offers 2 classes $75 for the CCW and i think $150 for the safety class. You do have to be a HRA member though. I went the with the $75 HRA CCW course and bought the cheapest gun(Ruger 10/22) at Firearms international and got the safety class free.

Basic safety course is $75 from LIFE if you bring your own handgun/ammo.
CCW course is $75 as well.  Their calendar is here:  https://lifehawaii.com/calendar/

In addition, to the fees you need to cover, you have to practice to meet the CCW skills requirement which costs several hundreds dollars worth of ammo.

These courses/fees/ammo costs essentially amounts to a tax on a constitutional right which I believe is against the law.  I believe it's also against the law to require a license to be able to exercise your constitutional right.  When you think about it "licensing" a "constitutional right" is an oxymoron.  I believe this is the reason why the legislators purposefully call it a CCW permit and not a license.

If it's confirmed that we are actually being taxed for exercising our 2nd amendment right, we should have a $500/yr tax credit for CCW holders to cover all fees and ammo requirement to maintain a CCW license.  In the gun community we should all make it a point to call it a CCW license and not "permit".

Not a ton, but more than it should have had to been.  Had to pay for the new class, ammo to shoot the test, passport photo (they never used), and the $150 fee.

I did not have to spend money to practice and shot 100% for both guns.

The Honolulu CCW test is pretty easy unless you have an unusual gun like an airweight revolver or derringer.

Do a lot of dry fire practice test runs, then do live fire a couple times should do it.

Im about to renew my LTC. HPD said if I already have a LTC it only cost $50 to renew it. It’s only $150 for first time applicants. Im dropping off my application to renew 2 LTC’s tomorrow. Hopefully it really is only $50 per pistol.

If you're on Oahu, it's cash only.

The application form has information fields for two firearms.  If you want to add more beyond those two you just grab an extra copy of that individual sheet and add more firearms info.  Unfortunately, you'll have to fill out ALL of the other duplicitous info on that page.  Not sure what the maximum number of firearms on a single LTC is.
