Grease - for guns that sit a while between trips to the range
« on: November 10, 2024, 06:51:17 PM »
I have TW25 and Tetra grease…. which are fine when I used to go to the range ever month

With the range closures and the new operating procedures, my stuff has been sitting for years and the TW25 and Tetra separated in both the tubes and on my toys.

I now have to try to knead the tubes… but it is a fail and oil comes out first.

The grease now seems more like a semi dry paste on my toys.

I’ve googled and it sounds like Brian Enos glide slide doesn’t separate in the tube or on toys

What grease are you folks using for firearms that sometimes sit for a while (say like about 5 years)

If all working greases separate over time, I’ll just use CLP.  Not looking for a storage grease like cosmoline.

Tnx!

Frog Lube works for me.  After a few years, it starts to turn dark, but it cleans off easily with some degreaser -- ready for another coating.

i like that it is a dry lube.  It doesn't collect lint, hair and dust as much.  When you take it to practice, the heat causes the lube to liquify, providing more than enough lube to operate.

I used a heat gun to melt/bake the lube into the metal.  I like that i won't be grabbing an oily, slippery firearm from storage if I need to use it immediately.

Tests on YT convinced me, in that Frog lube resisted rust longer than every other lube/protectant they tried.  Things might have changed since then, but it's been good enough.

I'm partial to synthetic wheel bearing grease.  and Mobil 1 motor oil, no specific viscosity, whatever's in use and in-reach.

regular dinosaur wheel bearing grease for stuff that sees more frequent usage.  and gun oil, or Mobil 1.

Rpol - I could see the logic to wheel bearing grease….it lasts for over a decade and over 100k miles.

I ordered Brian Enos slide glide.  If that is also a dud, I’ll try your suggestion

Flapp - I’m a little hesitant on froglube.  I had used fireclean oil which was also plant based (veg oil?) and had a bad experience.   It was probably fine if I went to the range more often but not so great for me cause my firearms sat for a while.  So now I’m paranoid about plant based stuff.   Froglube should be fine…it’s just me.

Q - thanks I’ll try red lithium grease (wheel bearing grease) if the stuff I just ordered is a dud.

I’m surprised that no one mentioned what Glock recommends for grease  - the one that has copper in it….permatex?  I bought a used G19 with about 1k rounds thru it.   I think it had sat since COVID and the grease had dried out…..took me some time to get it removed from the slide using rubbing alcohol and q tips (I should have used a brush to loosen it).  I wouldn’t get permatex cause my pistols tend to sit for a bit.

In a way, I can see why some people only use oil and not grease on their slides….the grease might dry out.  Pita to clean/remove and might affect function.  I still try to follow - slide/grease and spin/oil.  Ar’s are a different story

But if I keep running into grease that separates and dries, I’ll start only oiling my pistol slides

Oil dries out much faster.  I've never had my grease dry out or harden for a year (covid shutdowns).  I did notice after a month or a few, that oil dried out. This is why I switched to grease.  I'll check later which brands I'm using. 1 is blue.

Oil has it's benefits, like if you need a quick lube before a range day and you don't have time or want to get your hands dirty with grease.  but then the thought is if you used grease, then you're g2g for the range day.  Guess some people don't do a gear check the day before.

I've heard that frog lube, even though applies like a grease, once it heats up, it melts. Where as other greases don't melt as easily.  It is designed to do this. IDK if this is 1 particular Frog Lube grease or all of them. I never bought it and only saw a vid on it on YT.  I never bought it not because of this, but because I use what I have at home first (free stuff). Unless the product is super better like when I switched from Balistol to Breakthrough cleaner due to the smell and cleaning performance of Breakthrough. Got BT as a free sample and was very impressed.

True, the oil will migrate and will have to re-oil before I go to the range.   But if the grease separates and solidifies, it is more work to ungunk it.  Hopefully the Enos slide glide doesn’t separate and solidifies.  If that fails, I’ll try the wheel bearing grease

I’m leery of balistol since it is plant based.   I think it is fine if you use your firearm frequently but if my  firearms sit for a while….idk.

I’m sure froglube is fine for the most part but I’ve been scarred by fireclean

CLP has been fine so far.  Knock on wood.  I need to go thru my shotguns and rifles…..

Warrior Poet had a vid on grease. It's true that it gets more gunk in it, but that makes cleanign easier. Just wipe it off and done. No need scrub with a brush as all the carbon is trapped in the grease.

True, it is easy to wipe off grease if it hasn’t solidified.   But when it solidifies…..

Thanks Flapp for the info….will read it tonite

I have been really liking SLIP 2000 EWL-30

The -30 is thicker than the normal slip 2000 ewl which is on the thin side. It seems to stay put better on slide rails and bcg better. And seems to last a while for dryfire.

I am like you and haven’t been going to the range much lately. But dryfire practice has been pretty smooth with the ewl-30.

And when I need grease. I have had good luck with Slip 2000 EWG. I have only been using it about 2 years. But seems to work good so far.

We can use grease guns at the range now?

I shot 1 in Vegas that's full auto.  You can feel the metal moving. Like an AK, but 100X worst.

It was very cheap to make. If full-auto's were legal for everybody, this would be made by High Point.
