Civil Beat showing HIFICO members walking around with polearms while also quoting Karl Rhoads and Chris Marvin about guns because the article really seems to be about guns in some bizarre nebulous sort of way.

Did Madeleine Valera reach out to anybody at HIFICO while putting together this excellent piece of journalism?

Looks like a well written article and it shows that it's not just guns criminals use.  That everyday items are commonly used in crimes.  The gun murders have increased in the past few years.  Used to be knives, other objects, and unarmed murders were more representative.

Alan Beck provided the counter.

I don't know the whole story behind the Maui machete incident, but from news videos it looked like it could be justified.  Person was trespassing and officers responded.   A machete held under the arm could be swung in a half second and the shooting occured at 6 to 8 ft, a very close distance
Issue is there didn't appear to be a need for urgency to act as no other people were around.  Car could've been block in and other tools could be used.

It struck me as a terrible article. Where is the news here? It meandered through some crime stats without saying much. Somehow mixed together cops shooting a dude carrying a machete, Mississippi, and the open-carry gatherings. A very tenuous narrative that somehow connects these things.
