Honolulu's budget

Interesting stats.  Majority of the budget goes to pension/retirement, debt, and the rail.

seems like employee pension funds should be funded by employee contributions?  seems like it isn't.  no wonder everybody likes to be a double-dipper, or triple-dipper.  Federal, military, then state or county job?  or start off with a state job, retire, then pick up an easy county job to get another pension?  I guess it's in the same sinking boat as social security.  employee contributions too low, tax-payer picks up the rest.

that's a helluvalot of money for "debt service".  borrowed, and then can't pay the piper?  the viggerish too high?  who'd they borrow from, the mafia?  keep rolling over the debt into more debt?  like those debt consolidation loans frequently advertised?

Yikes!  their financial manager should not be getting bonuses.  since they can't be fired.

It's like social security.  Employee pays and employer matches it.

There are 3 categories:  Contributory, Non-contributory and a Hybrid of the two.

Basically, there is a range of options available for state employees under the state's Employee Retirement System (ERS).  It's too complicated to give a simple summary of each type.

There are videos to (hopefully) explain the plans:

the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.

THis is why state employee's benefits suck. If you got in in the 80's, for retiree medical, you and your spouse are covered full. Then later, the spouse got no free medical upon retirement. Bascially the state benefits suck now and only a fool would take a state job or someone with no education. Their pay sucks too. Back in the 80s, the pay sucked, but the benefits were amazing.

It's funny how our state law well before Barry care, the employer had to provide medical insurance and can only charge the employee 1.5% of their weekly wage. But this law excludes state employees. Which is why medical for a 2 adults and 1 child is like $1500 a month instead of $40.

If you are looking for a pension there's only so many options left.   I believe the pension is still better than fed.  Gives more %.

Some people are,  and that's why they would pick the State.   I know some people who work various government solely because of the benefits.

Incorrect.

Federal is under age 62 or age 62 with less than 20 years of service: 1% of high-3 average salary per year of service
Age 62 or older with 20 or more years of service: 1.1% of high-3 average salary per year of service

I believe the State is 1.75% on high 5 at age of 60 or 30 years.

Ur paying 1500/mo (3 family) for insurance. Imagine soending $500 and investing the $1k. It will exceed any pension.

Besides the crap pay, the states pension isnt worth it.

So only a moron or someone with no options would now work for the state for majority of the positions.

This state is full of morons.

I know someone who was applying for multiple state jobs. All of the took 8 months+ to call back. The reason, they want 15 applicants before they start calling people back. This is for positions that require a college degree and without one.

Who pays 1500 for state insurance?   It's subsidized.   I would have to look up the exact numbers but it should be fairly affordable.  I knew people who were single paying 75$.

My grandfather worked for the State and he's earned more money from his pension than he did working.   Depends on how long you live.

It's attitudes like that,  that makes government worse .  Civil service used to be a duty to your country to try and make it better.  Serve the people.  It's not only about money.

I know people with 3 in their family. 2 adults and 1 child.  For a single person, it's about $900.  Compare this to say a retail store that I know of in Ala Moana Shopping center. For 2 adults, it's $400. Right now, we're paying $600/mo for 2 adults and 1 child for a different private company, plus the similar state position for Mrs.CMO was paying about $15K a year less than what she's getting via her private employer.

Like you just showed, your grandfather has good benefits. Civil service only goes so far, when it's so bad what's the point.  Like any employment, if you want good workers, you have to make it worth their while.

Lets use the military as an example: a E2 gets shit pay. But they can get cola, housing, medical, see the nation/world, etc...

You can argue about it all you want, but my opinion stands due to looking at various jobs in the state from those that require a college degree to those who don't.  Plus dealing with various state departments in person and over the phone and getting retards for most of it.
