Well all be dead, since assault weapons will grow sentient and run around shooting people at random just like Maximum Overdrive

I was going to say The Second.

4/24/2025   S   The Conference committee recommends that the measure be PASSED, WITH AMENDMENTS. The votes of the Senate Conference Managers were as follows: 4 Aye(s): Senator(s) Elefante, Rhoads, Chang, Wakai; Aye(s) with reservations: none ; 0 No(es): none; and 0 Excused: none.

Notice all the parts left out by these types of anti 2a people.

Here's a hint: Wakai voted for the original SB401 which banned only 50 cals. Not this version that added in everything else.

This is all so weird. I'd use Everytown's crocodile tears to make my morning tea if I could, but they're premature, right?

Leafing through the newest version of the bill...

  (i)  This section shall not apply to the possession or use of an assault rifle, assault shotgun, or detachable magazine with a capacity greater than ten rounds when used for:

     (1)  Lawful subsistence hunting by residents of the State engaged in traditional and customary practices recognized under article XII, section 7 of the Hawaii State Constitution; or

     (2)  Invasive species control authorized by the department of land and natural resources, or by private landowners participating in conservation and wildlife management activities consistent with state permits and regulations."

A lot to unpack here.

Are they seriously saying that possession of "assault weapons" and 11+ round magazines will now be allowable if you have enough Hawaiian blood quantum? That's effectively what this says, right?

The relevant portion of the Constitution below:

The State reaffirms and shall protect all rights, customarily and traditionally exercised for subsistence, cultural and religious purposes and possessed by ahupua'a tenants who are descendants of native Hawaiians who inhabited the Hawaiian Islands prior to 1778, subject to the right of the State to regulate such rights.

senate amendment was to add allow hunting and add grandfather for 30 round mags...

It grandfathers all 11+ round magazines, right? (I rock AUG and P90 mags, so this is relevant to me.)

sounds like you could use your Glock with a 'stendo" for hunting, ostensibly.

but when you're done hunting, then it becomes illegal again?

maybe this will boil down to that if you have a Hunters Ed card, you can own 30rd PMAGs?

ANY law that restricts firearms is a victory for the anti crowd.
They will chant, "it's a good FIRST step!"
Then use that as propaganda to try again next time.

Note:
If you applied their common sense to cars (instead of guns), we should ban all cars that travel faster than 60 mph.
Cars kill WWAAAYYY more people than guns.

if they grandfather greater-than-10rd mags, effective date Jan 1st 2026, can you imagine the flurry of orders that will suddenly originate from Hawaii!

Brownells does sell a 100pk of 30rd PMAGs, Gen M3 window, $1,200.  It's that Lifetime Supply thing again.  Like Costco before a shipping strike.  or hurricane.

don't forget the PMAG 40.

It wasn't technically killed.  It was put on life support without a chance of surviving the current legislative deadline.
Quote
The Senate president, Kauai’s Ron Kouchi, called for a show of hands, and declared the amendment dead.

But amendment supporters demanded a roll call, and with the vote tied at 12-12, the clerk called for his vote.

“Mister president?”

Kouchi paused and then said “aye.”

And the clerk announced “13-ayes, 12 nos. Amendment passes.”

The chamber was filled with loud cheers from the gallery.

To avoid unnecessary further drama, the bill was sent back to committee with no time to be revived this year.

that was a close call.  too close for comfort.

we got to do a better job next year so that it doesn't get this far.  JMHO.

although kinda hard to beat them when they cheat like hell (e.g. gut & replace).

Thats not why it died, nor was it their concern.
