  (i)  This section shall not apply to the possession or use of an assault rifle, assault shotgun, or detachable magazine with a capacity greater than ten rounds when used for:

     (1)  Lawful subsistence hunting by residents of the State engaged in traditional and customary practices recognized under article XII, section 7 of the Hawaii State Constitution; or

     (2)  Invasive species control authorized by the department of land and natural resources, or by private landowners participating in conservation and wildlife management activities consistent with state permits and regulations."

A lot to unpack here.

Are they seriously saying that possession of "assault weapons" and 11+ round magazines will now be allowable if you have enough Hawaiian blood quantum? That's effectively what this says, right?

It grandfathers all 11+ round magazines, right? (I rock AUG and P90 mags, so this is relevant to me.)

sounds like you could use your Glock with a 'stendo" for hunting, ostensibly.

but when you're done hunting, then it becomes illegal again?

maybe this will boil down to that if you have a Hunters Ed card, you can own 30rd PMAGs?

ANY law that restricts firearms is a victory for the anti crowd.

Senate President sent bill back to committee ending the bill from going to the house for this year!

Its dead, the message is clear, NO to gut and replace! Im thankful they did the right thing. They will be back next year, and I hope they do it the right way.

It wasn't technically killed.  It was put on life support without a chance of surviving the current legislative deadline.

The Senate president, Kauai’s Ron Kouchi, called for a show of hands, and declared the amendment dead.

But amendment supporters demanded a roll call, and with the vote tied at 12-12, the clerk called for his vote.

“Mister president?”

Kouchi paused and then said “aye.”

And the clerk announced “13-ayes, 12 nos. Amendment passes.”

The chamber was filled with loud cheers from the gallery.

To avoid unnecessary further drama, the bill was sent back to committee with no time to be revived this year.
