Anybody growing guava? Just curious.
It used to be common on Maui.
I only see the strawberry guava on Oahu.

Guava used to fall all over the road on the way to Iao Valley.  It was just all over the place.  My father made guava jelly a couple of times

I planted one a year ago or so. Still kinda small but gotten a couple of fruit from it.
I have planted a bunch of trees that produce edible fruit but got room for a couple more, always looking for new options. Was looking into pecan but it seems it needs a cold season and needs to get kinda big

When we were small keeds growing up on the North Shore my Uncle used to take us in the mountains and we would pick guava.  We then would sell it to the factory for pocket money.

I remember the mgr. of the factory coming out to tell us that they would even accept the guava that fell on the ground, even the ugly, smashed, seemingly inedible kind.  That made us happy since it made it easier to pick more.  Dunno if the mgr. just felt sorry for us hanna batta peasant looking keeds.

But I think they use the quava to make jelly and jams.  So dey no kea how look like.

This was in the late 60's and early 70's.  I doubt anybody does this now.

Two of my good friends get guava trees that produce ono fruit in very good quantity.  One in Kailua and one in Waimanalo.

As far as nuts go, since EEF made a comment on it, Mac nuts are better than pecans nutrition and taste wise.  I must have over 8000 Macnuts in my stash.

I get them from a friend in Kona.  He has thousands fall to the ground every year.  I have brought hundreds to Oahu to give away.

The actual reason why I asked about guava was because I live near a gulch filled with haole koa, castor plants and other assorted rubbish.
I thought it would be cool to play Johnny Appleseed with assorted fruit trees discreetly planted in this gulch.
Perhaps one day when I kick the bucket, kids will be able to explore the gulch and pick guava or some other stuff.

Right now, the gulch only has homeless people hiding in the bushes.
They steal shopping carts to carry their stuff then dump the carts on the sidewalk and disappear into the bushes.

Who's going to keep the homeless from picking the fruit trees clean, or worse yet , destroying the plants for some odd reason?

And who's going to be brave enough to venture there to do some picking if there are still homeless hiding in the bushes?  Might have to pay a toll for safe passage.

I was thinking of a sharecropper arrangement.

Whoever cares for the plants and harvests the fruit will receive compensation.
Has to be a higher amount than the value of the produce.

But, that kinda defeats the whole purpose, huh?

And if you have to pay, might as well spend that money at the local farmer's market so you're not supporting someone's habit.

Once it has been shown that there seems to be no solution to fix/eliminate the homeless problem.....

more people started to join their ranks.

And what, pray tell, has this got to do with the thread topic?

Absoooloootlee notting.

Are they vacuum packed? I have seen macadamia nuts have a decent shelf life but they still do start to decline and go rancid slowly.

Macnuts will easily last one year if kept in the shell.  I made a really good cracker that doesn't need the husk removed first.

I also bought a good one on Amazon for $23 but you need to remove the husks first.  The nuts I give away are all unshelled.

I eat about a dozen a day.  Good health benefits and I heard guava and  especially the leaves is good if you have diarrhea.
