Old gun shop thread

For those of us who remmeber the old gun shops.

King's Sporting goods. King st. Downtown. No parking. Had to park in front or on the sides. Carry you case around downtown. Use to go there to fix my air rifles and dream of owning real guns. Wake up call was the Hawaii 5-0 episode when a guy bought a rifle there went up diamond head and shot at people aka sniper. It upset me at 10 years old to see that they did a show like that and found out Jack Lord was really anti-gun in real life but owned several guns himself.

The Armory. Was my place to get reloading supplies. Always had a lot of consignments i liked but couldnt afford

Honolulu Gun Club Pro Shop & Range. Voulenteered there for a few years.   Edwin Leong ran the pro shop. $10 FFL Transfers!  Met Norm Chung and Ed Masaki there. They made shooting challeging with their contests.

GUNS. those guys were loose cannons. I knew they would get in a lot of trouble one day.  They had a lot of guns tho.

Honolulu Sporting Goods. Aka HONSPORT. that was the shop to go to when in Ala Moana with dad.  Dreaming.
Political Correctness is FOS

Can anyone confirm or deny if the gun that was used to kill John Lennon was traced back to one of the shops here?

1978!??!  I wasn't even a twinkle in my dads eye yet.  Man, shooting back then must have been so much different.  Back then were there more outdoor ranges or was kokohead still the only place on the island?

I used to go to the Police pistol range in Kakaako, with my Dad, right about where the Medschool is now.
The dump tailings were the backstop and the yellow jackets in the rafters were merciless.
That had to be late '50's or early '60s.

Wow the kakaako area has changed a lot. From a old shooting range to a drag strip/race spot in the late 80s to the medical school now. Too bad none of those are still open.

During that time, the pistol range was where the skeet range is today. Eye protection was optional.
I used to shoot skeet with the Schofield guys in the cane field by the cemetery.
Later (early 80's) I shot combat pistol with the Rod and Gun Club on CR-1 and sometimes on PR-1
Around that same time, MPPL was just starting up. We shot at Koko Head and Puuloa.

I patronized SEC, GUNS, Hunting Supplies, and there was a shop on Piikoi but I don't remember the name. I did buy a scope from there. That's all there was as far as I can remember.

I remember the guns at Sears, bought lots of stuff from The Armory. Didn't that guy go to Jail for something/??? He had a nice shop.
Think it was King Sporting goods that had a gunsmith in the back. Guy's name was Darryl as I recall. Good friend of my Dad's. Helped him do a really
nice Koa stock and scope on an old two groove Springfield. Still have that rifle today. Stock as nice as back then.
Man that part of the memory is dusty. I was just a young kid.

Wasn't the owner of Hunting Supplies/Armory busted for dealing illegal steroids and poor inventory/record keeping?

Steroids. I remember that they had quite a few Swedish and 1909 Argentine Mausers. Their prices were just a little high for them back then, but I wish that I had bought a few.  I heard that they were all crushed by BATF. Some of the guys that worked there were nice, but the guy who got busted for steroids was a jerk.

Wasn't there a place just off Nimitz, maybe a few blocks away from Island Archer? I went the once with my dad, the guy was kinda off. When the "Tyke the Killer Elephant" thing went down, he had joke fliers for an elephant hunt in his shop. Didn't last long, closed within months it seemed. Also remembered the Armory and when SEC was right across the street from HPD, and SA only having one shop here with handguns and a dive shop all together in one spot...
