No More Stop/Start Systems
« on: May 13, 2025, 10:20:30 AM »
This is great news. The stop/start systems adds to the cost of the vehicle and maintenance costs.

DEF also needs to go. This system adds to the cost of trucking and nearly everything we buy.
Until the embargo Russia and China were the largest suppliers of urea, the main component of DEF.
We are now hearing reports that use of DEF is harmful to beneficial insects such as honey bees.
Repairing DEF systems is very expensive. This cost is passed on to consumers.

Uncle Tony has profound insight of the problems that are here or soon to be here.
I find it absolutely insane that a car built decades ago will out last a car fresh from the factory.
I hope Trump can fix this mess brought to us by the Obama / Biden era.

Damn tree huggers messing up things again.  I've had a friend with a Subaru and her car died on the freeway. She was at a stop and the car didn't re-start.  The mechanic said cause her battery was dead.

Some cars have a device you can buy from Amazon to disable this feature.  Some cars also have a button to disable it, but you gotta press it everytime you start your car.  Other cars like the older Ford Escapes, have no button to disable it.  Then your AC gets warm when you're at a stop cause the engine is shut off.

I have a 2013 Prius and it has a start/stop system that works perfectly and never had any problems. For those of you that didn’t

know, and I only found out two months after I bought the car used, a Prius does not have a starter, alternator or a fan belt.

I have had it for almost a year and it has been the most reliable trouble free car I have ever owned.

Congrats on finding a great ride. The hybrid vehicles work great for some people but not for the DIY crowd.
It might be a good idea to check the condition of the 12volt battery in the trunk. When this battery does die,
you will not be able to open the door or the trunk with the key fob. You will have to open the door with the
manual key, open the hood, and have the jump start terminal uncovered. You can then have someone
with another car or a jumper pack assist you. You will now be able to open the trunk and access the 12v. battery.

The start/stop system is an integral part of the normal hybrid drive systems.
Start/Stop was embedded into ICE engine systems with the idea that if it works on a hybrid it should
work on an ICE engine. Most people who have start/stop on their ICE cars do not want it for obvious
reasons.

Here are more words of wisdom from Tony. Please share his video. I will try to send it to Ed Case.
He is the only potential hope the current Hawaii Delegation in DC has. He has moved toward the left recently.

I have been working on my own cars since high school.  Since I got the Prius I have watched many YouTube videos and read many repair articles on it.  I feel confident I could replace the hybrid battery myself if needed.

They created a solution for a problem that didn't exist.

An AC works cold when the engine is running. So when the feature turns the engine off, the AC is no longer cold.  This happened for early models that had the start/stop feature. My 24  Suby  has this feature and the AC remains warm when the engine is off. But Mrs. CMO's Ford Escape 2023 the AC remains a little cold.  Not as cold compared to when the engine is running.  So it took some years to figure this out.  And I'm going to assume additional cost and at min, more drain on the battery.

Then starting a car so often, does it put more wear and tear on the motor?  Maybe not as bad in the mainland, but in HI's stop and go traffic, the feature is activated a lot.

My Toyota has this 'feature' and I hate it.  I can remember to push the deactivation button most of the time after starting the vehicle.  I'll probably wire-in a bypass.  Not only is the stop/start irritating it increases wear on the starter.  I can change the starter myself but the cost of a new Denso starter is not cheap.

Hybrid cars are the way to go, don't need a start stop feature for them.

My Prius has it. Makes no sense to NOT have it

I think it's a case of "you get what's available."

If your top choice of electric or hybrid vehicle comes with the start/stop feature, are you really going to take your less favorite option instead?

I feel like these debates are irrelevant for most people.  My daughter's 2008 Prius is still kicking, and she's had the least number of mechanical failures of any vehicle I've experienced.

I feel like, you buy the one you like, then drive it.  Over time, you'll form an opinion about whether you love or hate it.

You can research cars, appliances, etc. to death before buying, but it won't guarantee you'll love your top choice more than all the others.  I never thought I'd love my Plymouth Voyager minivan, but we kept it for 12 years.  it felt like i was getting rid of a member of the family when I sold it, but it was time and we really needed a pickup since we were buying a house.

More news from tk's garage.
Getting rid of the DEF systems will save trucking companies a ton of money.
The system can be very expensive to repair. The DEF systems are designed to be
difficult to modify. You cannot just unplug it. Lower costs for trucking means lower
costs for everything we buy.

Hybrid engines have different needs than an ICE drive engines.
Most Prius cars last a very long time provided that proper maintenance is performed.
When an engine on a Prius fails its usually due to owners neglecting to follow the maintenance
schedule, or even just checking the oil level. It seems that some completely forget about the gasoline
engine on a hybrid car. I know its weird but it does happen.

The video kinda sounds like a Mobil 1 ad but it does emphasize the importance of ensuring that
the correct type of oil (& filter) is used during an oil change. This is why I do my own oil changes.
I do not trust some neophyte at some Spiffy Lube joint with my cars.

New EPA rules on EV's.
No single occupancy EV's allowed in the HOV lanes.
We shall see how the HI state gov. deals with this.

There have been some really good deals on used cars on CL recently, probably due to people leaving the island. A bunch of them got snapped up already by those who understand the nature of planned obsolescence. Nothing made today will last as long as cars made 30 years ago. One bad chip in some random accessory circuit can turn your $100k status symbol into a storage container.

HI 1st began the EV benefits thing with free metered street parking, free airport parking, and HOV.  THey then removed teh free metered street parking like 5 years later. Then the free airport parking came shortly after that.  Now HOV.

I know a guy who had an EV solely for the airport parking as he traveled neighbor islands  alot. He sold his EV after they took this free parking away.
