This post is NOT to sell a firearm. I had sold an old Mauser bolt action rifle for a family as part of dividing  up the proceeds of an estate about 18 years ago in Washington State. The surviving family members new zilch about firearms. I got then about $3400. Sold it on Gunbroker.com. Sold it to a gun dealer and was able to ship it as a non-dealer. Everyone was happy. Recently I thought I might want to sell an unfired rifle through that website from Hawaii. Stopped in at a gun dealer in Hilo (don't think I should mention the dealer name). They had previously told me that they didn't sell on consignment, and suggested Gunbroker.com. I inquired about what it would cost. The gent at the counter told me it would be $200! $100 to ship it, and $100 to do the Hawaii paperwork. My unspoken thought was,  "Holy shit"!
    Any thoughts and it comments? Guess I'll check the two other dealers in Hilo about possibly consignment. Otherwise, I keep it. My issue is that, at 71,  open sights suck due to my eyesight. There is no way to mount a scope other than drilling and tapping mounting holes, and since there seems to be zero gunsmiths on the big island, that looks impossible.

Why not ship it as a non-dealer to a dealer again?  You can ship USPS.

Do you want to keep the rifle? From your post, it sounds like the only reason you're thinking of selling is you can't find anyone to do the tap & die to mount a scope.  Do I have that right?

This thread would be more productive if you posted the make, model and year of the rifle along with any details that might be relevant to mounting a scope, like existing iron sights, take-down version, etc.

Its an unfired Navy Arms Remington Rolling Block replica made by Pedersali. 45-70 caliber. 26" round barrel. Original seller at the monthly Puyallup Washington gun show acquired three.  Shrouded front post, and an adjustable  Williams rear sight. Bought it about 25 years ago. The Williams seems to be a discontinued model, as it is not on their website. That site is mounted in a dovetail. Used to be they had three stages of reloading data on the 45-70, not including any black powder loads. Weakest loads were for trap door Springfield originals and replicas. Middle loads were for the Remington Rolling Block originals and replicas. Stories loads were for the single shot Rugers numbers one and three, and various modern lever action rifles.
    I told the gun ship guy that a 45-70 should be great for wild pig hunters, and he kind of made a face like he was doubtful. I said that I could throw a 500 grain bullet at a person and put a pretty good hurt on them. He thought about it and seemed less doubtful. Since in the late 1800s they used 45-70 rifles to decimate the buffalo herds, wild pigs should be a no brainer.

Were you looking at using a scope made for your rifle like those in this video?

Or are you looking at mounting a more contemporary/modern scope?  The original scope design looks like it might give up to 4x magnification using the iron sights to mount it (not saying I'm sure it will, but that's how they look to me).

 As for putting your rifle on consignment? Probably there are two shops. One is near the tennis stadium. The dealer there charges a 20% consignment fee.

Not sure what he charges to put on gunbroker. 20% plus another fee?Not sure. If the rifle sells then the buyer on the other end will be paying for the shipping. Dealer packs the firearm very well for shipping.
