Credit card extended warantee/product protection
« on: September 01, 2025, 08:35:26 PM »
I used the American Express extended warrantee coverage for my broken zero gravity chair.  Submitted a claim this morning, got a $102 credit tonight.  That's fast service for a holiday.  I usually put in a couple claims a year for this or 90 day product protection.  I've submitted for things like torn pants, motorcycle gear, bunch of other stuff and always got it approved.  My friends got a washer/dryer get stolen right after it was delivered to their home.  They submitted a police report and got their money back.

Lot of credit cards have these benefits so look into it if something breaks.  Anyone use this before?

I went to Vegas with my wife, and we spent a couple of hours shopping.  We then took a cab to the Hard Rock Casino.  I got out first and my wife exited the same side.  I thought she had the shopping bag but she thought I had it.  As I tried to reach for the bag, the driver gunned it and was gone.  AMEX refunded the entire purchase price of over $150.

I got some prescription meds that my doctor didn't prescribe. The big pharmaceutical company just sent it and charged me hundreds for it. It didn't take very long to undo that charge. I still got the meds.

I ordered a JDM car and went through the trouble of importing it myself (not recommended) and turned out it was a lemon. Fortunately I used a credit card and got an estimate for the repairs and Chase canceled the transaction. It didn’t help for the import costs and taxes but I was able to negotiate with the seller what I considered a fair price. Glad that I didn’t totally burn them because the paperwork was incomplete which the seller express shipped it in a gesture of gratitude. FYI the Kalapama dmv office was the only place that knew how to register it. Big thanks to Aaron Rideout for helping me through the process and I would gladly pay him next time so that I would never have to deal with that hassle again.

I had a flat tire while on vacation. The car was rented from Thrifty.  The flat was not repairable.  I put on the spare and got a new vehicle.  I used the Costco VISA to rent the vehicle and declined the insurance from Thrifty.  I received a bill for over $400 to replace the tire (this includes loss of use charges for the vehicle).  Costco's insurance covered all but 3% of the claim.  It was pretty easy to do online, but there was a lot of paperwork to scan and upload.  It took about 6 weeks to get reimbursed.

Was the flat your fault?  Did you run into a curb?  Drive over spikes going the wrong way into a parking garage?  Did a vandal puncture it?

Unless you negligently or intentionally caused the tire damage, you shouldn't have to replace it.  Iff it was a puncture, it could have been plugged in less than an hour, preventing loss of rental time and costing $20 vs. a complete tire.

The tire was punctured by a piece of metal that sliced the tread area so a plug or patch wouldn't have fix it.  This was driving on county gravel roads in the Midwest.  If it was a nail or screw I'd have taken it to Sam's Club to get it repaired for free

Thanks for posting this.  The last time I rented a car that needed roadside assistance, it was a Sunday (my day off), and the car was in the parking garage of my hotel (Hilton) with a flat.  The rental agency said they had a hard time getting someone to come out on Sunday, but I could change it myself, and drive it in for a tire replacement or to swap vehicles.

After waiting 2 hours for a mechanic, I changed it myself.  When I went to the rental agency that night, they gave me an upgrade vehicle for my inconvenience, and i didn't have to pay a penny.

Now that I'm seeing this, i wonder if it's because I rented using my corporate Hertz account.  That had extras included, so the premium roadside coverage was probably standard.

Next time I rent a car on my dime, I'll check what additional coverages I have with all my credit cards, auto insurance, etc.  From what i just looked up, not all additional rental car coverages you pay for when renting include 100% of tire damage.  Some limit it to a dollar amount, like $400, while others have a deductible you must pay to cover some of the cost.  So, better check the fine print before paying for coverage that might be inadequate.

Also, don't leave any evidence in the car you had a tire repaired or any other repairs.  Rental agreements usually state you aren't allowed to authorize any repairs on their rental vehicles.  You report the damage, then let the agency handle repairs.

Surprised the CC paid for it since it's secondary coverage.  Or was it under the deductable on your regular car insurance?

Chase cards are unusual in that they are primary rental car coverage unlike secondary coverage on other cards.

The issuing bank for Costco's VISA is Citibank.  Since I declined the insurance from the car rental I believe that the VISA insurance becomes the primary.  When processing the claim they did ask for a copy of the declarations page from my personal car insurance.
