Quick question I’m afraid I know the answer to …
« on: October 07, 2025, 11:09:52 PM »
Are there any tactical shotgun trainings or shoots in the islands?

Is it only trap/skeet at Koko Head for Oahu?

I think Mission Bravo does a class once a year.  It's the only one I know of in Hawaii.

Shooting tactical semi-auto shotgun is similar to shooting short range carbine, just with a lot more kick so lean forward into it more and knowing your pattern at distances.  For pumps, rack right after the shot.

50% of tactical shotgun classes is reloading and switching shell types.  Can watch a youtube video on how to do it and practice with dummy shells.  Then practice it at a HRA open shoot in the bays.

They aren't very common.  So you have to monitor the different groups to see who's offering.  I think HRA had 1 last year.  When HDF was doing skill builders, they too were like once a year.

If you want to learn, like Zippz said, the best is youtube and dryfire with dummy shells.

Yep, got that part.  What I’m looking for is the next step - live fire practice.

On a “regular” basis it’s slugs only at the rifle range, or trap / skeet, at Koko Head - that appears to really be the legal limit of behavior with a semiauto shotgun on Oahu, hence my question.

Will do as you folks suggest - thanks for the info!

Hawaii is so restrictive with anything firearms.

Seems like the only practice one would have is when the SHTF for real.

In Hawaii, I mean.

I'd bet 7 out of 10 people out there shooting at each other could use a pointer or two.
Sometimes you gotta know when to save your bullets.

No shit.  We must be crazy to be here.

Wish shooting sports was like fishing here - like it is anyplace reasonably red on the mainland!

I was interested in taking a tactical shotgun class and asked t trainer who did my combat rifle classes about it. He said that the fundamentals are pretty much the same, the big difference is the reloading aspect. If you practice reloading your shotgun and clearing jams you could take most of what you learned in a rifle class and apply it to shotguns.

Sure makes total sense.

But I’m a product of the 1960’s, so I have an M14 - I’m not sure I’d be welcome amongst all you AR guys

Go to the open shoots by various orgs and practice there if they allow it.  When I go to open shoots, I don't just send bullets down range. I usually have a plan of what I want to practice.  I do the same for some skill builders as well.  Like I'll shoot support side on purpose for some exercises and not focus on being quick.

I've done a HRA skill builder where they only allowed AR's.

I really want to do a shotgun class too.  The most ive done is rifle or pistol courses with a staged shotgun on a table - load 2-5 rounds in the shotty and distribute slugs to the targets as fast as possible.  I have dummy rounds too but my wife would freak out if she saw me larping around the house racking shells

Too funny dude!

No kidding! - racking a semiauto shotgun is LOUD and unmistakable - including the shells whipping out of there into walls or whatever - it really is pretty out there to be doing in your typical single wall Hawaii home five feet from your neighbor watching TV ….  it’s funny man when you just lay it out there like that!

Ummmmm what macsak?

My M4 has a nice charging handle that you pull back and let slide forward chambering a shell from the magazine tube after ejecting the one in the chamber.

I my particular dialect this is called racking, but I’m always open to learning new things  8)

My DuckDuckGo Search Assistant gives the point to Kalihi Uka:

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

If you owned a shotgun and shotgun ammo, you would have known this.
