What happens when 42M people stop buying food all at once?

There are approximately 42M people on SNAP EBT (Food Stamps).  Due to the government shutdown, the federal funding for the USDA program may not issue benefits beginning this Saturday, Nov 1.

Hawaii is putting out information that they may assist SNAP beneficiaries who support a minor child or children in the event of federal funding being suspended.

It's not that program beneficiaries can't use EBT after Nov 1.  If they still have benefits available on their EBT card before the cut-off, they can still use those funds.  So, the sudden impact of the cut-off might be less severe than all 42M recipients all at once.

Quote
FNS confirmed that households may continue redeeming
EBT benefits issued before Nov. 1 at any SNAP-authorized
retailer. The suspension affects November issuance only and
does not impact the ability to use previously loaded benefits.

When I was a small kid our community supermarket (run by mom and pop owners) used to have these IOU vouchers that people could sign so they can pay back the supermarket at a later date.  My parents used to utilize this when we needed groceries but the paycheck didn't come yet.

Maybe the supermarkets can do something like this for people in need?

I suppose they could ring up the items on credit, then re-enter the items all over again once the card has enough funds available for food and void the credit.

There's a website where you can get a verification letter of benefits you're receiving and the amount.  That could be used to set limits at a store, but it would be tough to prevent someone from trying to get credit from multiple stores adding up to way more than the benefit amount per month.

IMO, if Trump doesn't back down, the Dems have no choice but to compromise on illegal alien healthcare.  Saying you want to give free healthcare to non-citizens while citizens can't afford to feed their families well isn't a good look for them.

Since the fake news ran headlines about how the veggies/fruits/etc... arent' being harvested/processed due to illegals being deported, this issue solves itself.
