why?
https://www.khon2.com/traffic/parking-permit-program-in-kalihi-valley-about-to-start/
As you know, Kam IV housing is right across the street from the Wilson tract (where I’ve lived for 27 years).

For many, many years, people who live in our neighborhood and others close by would be unable to find street parking when they came home after work.

Why?  Because Kam IV housing does not allow visitor parking.  Since half an island’s worth of Micronesians invade the place each night to crash for free on our dime, they would literally take all the street parking in all directions from the PM till next morning.  They also routinely donated their used diapers, half-eaten fast food garbage, and the occasional dump on the sidewalk of our neighborhood.  We had crazy zombies everywhere, and people felt oppressed because they very much were.

So residents got to blocking-off sections of the street with garbage cans and cones, etc., so that after busting their ass all day they could crawl into the hovel they paid out the ass for - without having to park their car in Kaneohe.

Then the Micronesians complained and the effing city came in and slapped stickers everywhere saying they would start citing for parking obstructions….

… and this being Kalihi, THE SHIT HIT THE FAN BABY!

It was war, and ultimately, we got them out of here, by fighting for the RPZ.

Now, seems the city is soaking folks cost-wise, so the shit never ends here in Hawaii.

So there’s the answer to you question, dude.

PS:  Now we have gunfire outside the housing pretty regularly, but we succeeded in keeping them out of our neighborhood.  It’s bizarre to hear gunfire like that.  Really brings out the Snake Plisskin in a feller.

that's sad. I was on Alu and you know that street is right across the housing. I lived on that corner and once in awhile we'd have unknown cars park in front of our house. But this was in the 80s. It was a nice neighborhood then. We'd have freestyle BMX jam sessions at the bottom of Alu and Jennie.

I can see the need for parking permits in residential areas.  However the $125 cost of the permits is concerning, which is only for the labor.  About 3 to 4 hours in labor per permit per year?  Should be like 1 hour at most.   And the citation money could be used to pay for the permits.

The city’s Department of Transportation Services, which runs the program, lowered the fee from the initial price of $125 a year. DTS says the program is very labor-intensive – from confirming the person actually lives in the area, checking the vehicle, issuing permits and keeping permits up-to-date when people get new cars.

Wasn’t here then, but what you describe about what it was like back then, is how it is now - except no strange cars, etc.

Just a friendly quiet neighborhood with kids, dogs, cats, chickens, crusty bastards - all wandering around peacefully saying howzit to each other 😎

$60 per year ($5/mo) seems reasonable to me.
