Poll on your firearms law awareness
« on: April 03, 2026, 10:21:30 PM »
Here's a poll to gauge awareness of the current firearms laws and lawsuits. Please respond to the poll by replying choices you DID NOT KNOW are currently in effect and any questions or notes in the comments.

Example:  Reply 1,4,7,10 for those you didn't know were in effect.

1.  HI CCW licenses are valid for 4 years
2.  HI CCW Licenses are good statewide in Hawaii
3.  WIth a HI CCW License, you may currently legally CCW in parks/beaches, places serving alcohol, private property w/o a guns allowed sign per Wolford v Lopez (as long as there isn't a "no guns allowed" sign present on private property)
4.  Honolulu PD Firearms is open to 6:30pm Wednesdays, Permit to Acquire from HI FFLs can be emailed to you, and HI FFL acquired firearms can be registered remotely.
5.  Switchblade/butterfly knives, batons, swords, and other non-firearm weapons are legal to carry (some are restricted to open or concealed carry)
6.  Firearms safety courses for Permit to Acquire are valid for 4 years and only if taken after Jan 1 2024
7.  Hunters Education courses do not expire for long gun Permit to Acquire
8.  HRS 134-9.3 If guns are left unattended in a vehicle, they must be in a secure impact/tamper resistant locked container and out of sight.
9.  The $150 CCW licensing fee can be waived for low income applicants
10.  Those with a misdemeanor conviction disqualifying them from possessing a firearm (besides domestic violence) can possess a firearm after 20 years has lapsed.
11.  I knew all of the above are currently in effect.

All 10 are things I didn't know.
For number 6, would a Firearms Safety Course taken before 2024 not be valid for a permit to acquire?

It is no longer valid due to the laws changing in 2023 where instructors have to be verified and additional content taught in the class.  You will have to retake the class with a police department approved instructor, and the class is good for 4 years.

Related to #5, what is the legality of owning or carrying metal knuckles?

Legal to have but must be openly carried.  So at the very least, a small part of it has to be visible.  I'm not familiar with metal knuckles, but for example with switchblade knives at least a clip on the pocket or something has to be visible.

Most non-firearms weapons, objects with a primary purpose as a weapon, have to be openly carried with exceptions for a few things like tasers, batons, etc.

     §134-51  Deadly or dangerous weapons; prohibitions; penalty.  (a)  Any person, not authorized by law, who knowingly carries concealed on the person, or in a bag or other container carried by the person, any dirk, dagger, blackjack, metal knuckles, or other deadly or dangerous weapon shall be guilty of a misdemeanor; provided that this subsection shall not apply to a billy.

     (b)  Any person who knowingly possesses or intentionally uses or threatens to use a dirk, dagger, blackjack, metal knuckles, or other deadly or dangerous weapon, or a billy, while engaged in the commission of a separate felony or misdemeanor shall be guilty of a class C felony.

     (c)  A conviction and sentence under subsection (b) shall be in addition to and not in lieu of any conviction and sentence for the separate felony or misdemeanor; provided that the sentence imposed under subsection (b) may run concurrently or consecutively with the sentence for the separate felony or misdemeanor.

     (d)  Upon conviction of a person for carrying or possessing a deadly or dangerous weapon pursuant to this section, the deadly or dangerous weapon shall be summarily destroyed by the chief of police or sheriff.

     (e)  Notwithstanding any provision to the contrary, this section shall not apply to:

     (1)  A firearm, whether loaded or not, and whether operable or not;

     (2)  A switchblade knife as defined in section 134-52;

     (3)  A butterfly knife as defined in section 134-53; or

     (4)  An electric gun as defined in section 134-81.

     (f)  For purposes of this section, "billy" includes a cudgel, truncheon, police baton, collapsible baton, billy club, or nightstick.

     (g)  It shall be a defense to a prosecution under subsection (a) that a person was lawfully present in the person's own home at the time of the offense

#3 has always been confusing to me as the 9th said no can carry in parks/beaches or restaurants taht serve booze. But since SCOTUS is taking up Wolford, which is specifically to the vampire rule, the 9ths entire ruling is not in action.  Which means the local ruling by Judge Kobayashi's injunction stands, so one can carry in parks/beaches and restaurants that serve booze.

I read this from your FB post reply to someone else who was asking the same Zipps.  Thanks!!!

Thanks to all for answering the poll, had around 100 respondants.  The purpose of it is to find out what you know and don't know, and find a way to get the word out to everyone.  If gun advocates, the 1% of gun owners, don't know whats going on then the other 99% of gun owners know even less.  May do a live session to answer questions and public campaign to get the word out.  Continue to answer the poll and ask questions and comments.

As far as the stats, people responded evenly among the non-CCW topics, with most of the don't knows significantly higher on the CCW related questions.
